Electrolux Dryer E64 Error Code: Heater Open Circuit (Dryer Runs but Won't Heat)
What the code means
Electrolux's Dryer Tech Data Sheets for its electronic-control dryers (for example the EIMED60J sheet, part 137265000B, and the EIMED55 sheet) list E64 as "Heater Open Circuit," with "Heating element or wiring defective" as the possible fault condition. The solution the sheet gives is: "Check heater coils and connections for open circuits. Replace heater and/or wiring and retest." In plain terms, the control tried to run the heater and found no complete circuit through it, most often because a coil in the element has burned through or a heater wire or terminal has come loose or burned off. That's why a dryer with E64 typically runs and tumbles but never gets warm. The same sheet lists the neighboring heat codes separately: E61 is a heater relay failure on the control board, E63 is the heater shorted to the cabinet (earth ground), E65 is too many high-limit thermostat trips, E66 is an open thermal limiter, and E67 is a heater sensing failure on the control board. Electrolux's support article on a dryer that runs but doesn't heat adds that an electric dryer is fed by two house circuits or fuses, and if one of them trips or blows the drum may turn while the heater won't operate, so rule that out before buying parts. Frigidaire dryers built on the same Electrolux platform use the identical E64 definition. The sheet's heater diagnostics describe an electric heating element, so E64 is a fault on electric models; a gas dryer that won't heat points to gas supply or burner parts instead.
Likely causes
- A heating element coil that has burned through or broken (the cause Electrolux's tech data sheet names first)
- A loose, burned or broken wire or terminal between the control and the heating element
- One leg of the 240-volt house circuit tripped or a house fuse blown, which Electrolux says lets the drum turn while the heater won't operate
- A heater that has been running hot because of a clogged lint screen or restricted vent, which shortens element life
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Unplug the dryer or switch off its 240 V breaker before any checks. Electrolux's tech sheet carries the warning to disconnect electrical current before servicing.
- To confirm the stored code, Electrolux's tech sheet says to wake the dryer by pressing any button except Cancel, then hold Cancel and Start/Pause together for 6 seconds. The last code shows as E plus two digits, and E00 means no fault is stored.
- Make sure the cycle or temperature isn't set to Air Fluff, which tumbles without heat by design.
- Turn the dryer's double breaker fully off and back on, or replace the house fuses. Electrolux notes that if one of the two circuits trips, the drum can turn with no heat.
- If it still won't heat, have a qualified electrician verify the outlet supplies 240 volts, as Electrolux suggests.
- Clean the lint screen and check that the exhaust vent and outside hood aren't blocked or crushed, so a new heater isn't stressed the same way.
- If you're comfortable with a meter and the dryer is unplugged, inspect the heater and its wires for broken coils, burned terminals or loose connectors. That's the open-circuit check Electrolux's sheet calls for. Stored codes can be cleared in Diagnostic Mode by holding the far-left button under the display and Cancel together for 3 seconds, per the sheet.
๐ When to call a pro
- E64 comes back after you've reset the breaker and confirmed 240 volts at the outlet.
- The heating element tests open and needs replacing, or you find burned or melted wiring at the element or terminal block.
- Testing live voltage at the terminal block or control board. Leave that to a trained technician.
- The dryer is under warranty; use an Electrolux authorized service provider.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Heating element
Electrolux's fix for E64 when the coils are broken. Match it to your full model number from the label inside the door opening.
Search eBay โDigital multimeter
For checking the heater coils and leads for an open circuit with the dryer unplugged.
Search eBay โDryer vent cleaning kit
A restricted vent makes the heater run hot, so clean the vent run when you replace a heater.
