Frigidaire Dryer E61 Error Code: Heater Relay Failure (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Frigidaire's Dryer Tech Data Sheet lists E61 as "Heater Relay failure," with the possible causes "Heater relay stuck open or closed" and "Wiring defective." The heater relays sit on the electronic control board and switch power to the heating element. A relay stuck open means the element never gets power, so the drum tumbles but stays cold. A relay stuck closed is the more serious case, because the heater can stay powered when the cycle is stopped. That is why the sheet's first check is for power at the heater relay outputs with the cycle stopped. E61 is different from E64, which is the heating element itself open, and from E65, which is too many high-limit thermostat trips, usually from a blocked vent.
Likely causes
- A heater relay on the electronic control board stuck closed (welded contacts)
- A heater relay stuck open, so the element never gets power
- A loose, burned or damaged wire or connector between the board and the heater
- A failed electronic control board
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- If the dryer is heating while it's stopped or off, or you smell burning, unplug it or turn off both dryer breakers right away and don't use it until it's repaired.
- Turn off power at the breaker for a few minutes, then turn it back on and run a timed-dry cycle to see whether E61 returns.
- Check that both 240 V breakers for the dryer are on and neither has tripped. Frigidaire's no-heat checklist starts with the breakers and the power supply.
- If you're comfortable, read the stored codes. Frigidaire's tech sheet says to wake the dryer with any button except Cancel, then hold Cancel and Start/Pause together for 6 seconds to show the last code. On knob-style controls the code may come as 6 beeps, a pause, then 1 beep.
- If E61 keeps coming back, stop there. Every remaining step in Frigidaire's procedure is a live-voltage check on the control board.
๐ When to call a pro
- E61 comes back after a power reset. Frigidaire's tech data sheet has a technician check for a short across the heater relays and for line voltage at the relay outputs with the cycle stopped, then for an open circuit between L1 and the relay inputs.
- The wiring checks out. Frigidaire's fix is to replace the electronic control board and retest.
- The dryer keeps heating with the cycle stopped. Leave it unplugged until it's repaired, since a stuck-closed relay can keep the heater powered.
- The dryer is still under warranty. Contact Frigidaire service before opening the cabinet.
