Frigidaire Error H1 (HI): Refrigerator or Freezer Too Warm (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 · Based on 6 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Frigidaire lists H or HI (a blinking temperature plus a beeping tone) as the High Temp alarm on its refrigerators. On a digital display HI looks just like H1, which is why most people search for H1. Frigidaire says the alarm comes on when the freezer reaches 26°F or warmer or the refrigerator reaches 55°F or warmer, and on some models when the temperature has stayed too high for more than an hour. If HI shows on only the freezer or only the fridge display, that's the section that's warm. On models with a Clear Alerts button, the alarm beeps about every 60 seconds, and when you first acknowledge it the display shows the highest temperature the unit reached. You can mute the alarm, but it stays lit until the temperature is back to normal. After a power failure (PF on the display), HI may also show until the unit cools down.

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Close both doors firmly and check that nothing such as a tall bottle, a drawer, or a shelf item is keeping them from shutting.
  2. Press Clear Alerts or Alarm Reset (the name depends on your model) to quiet the beeping. Note the highest temperature it shows so you know how warm it got.
  3. Check the temperature settings. Frigidaire recommends 37°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer.
  4. Look at the door gaskets all the way around. Wipe them clean with warm soapy water, and check for tears or gaps. A dollar bill closed in the door should feel some drag.
  5. Give it time. After the doors are shut and settings are right, the alarm should clear on its own once the temperature drops back to normal, which can take several hours after a long door-open or power outage.
  6. If the alarm won't clear, reset the controls by unplugging the refrigerator for 30 seconds and plugging it back in, or by switching off its breaker for 30 seconds. Switching the breaker resets everything else on that circuit too.
  7. Make sure the vents inside the fridge and freezer aren't blocked by food, and that there's space around the unit for air to flow.
  8. Check food safety. If the refrigerator was above 40°F for more than about two hours, throw out perishable food like meat, dairy and leftovers.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • HI keeps coming back even though the doors are closed and sealing, the settings are right, and you've reset the unit.
  • The fridge or freezer isn't getting cold at all, or you hear the compressor running nonstop with no cooling. That points to a fan, defrost, control or sealed-system problem.
  • Frost is building up heavily on the freezer's back wall, which can mean a defrost system failure.
  • The unit was installed in the last 30 days. Frigidaire says to contact your installer first, and otherwise to contact Frigidaire to schedule service.
  • Any repair that involves refrigerant (the sealed system) needs a licensed technician.
