Samsung Refrigerator Error Code 14E (14C): Ice Maker Sensor Error

Reviewed 2026-10-23 · Based on 4 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Samsung US lists 14E as Ice Maker Sensor Error, separate from 8E (the ice maker in the freezer) and from 39E (Ice Maker Function Error, a stuck or failed ice maker). Samsung's French-door ice maker service bulletin lists 14C as Ice Maker (FF) Sensor Error, where FF means fresh food, the fridge compartment. Samsung's service manual for the RF28HDEDB French-door fridge says the board shows this error when the sensor is physically separated from its housing, when there's a contact error, a disconnection or a short circuit, or when the sensor reads a temperature above 149°F (65°C) or below -58°F (-50°C), which can only mean a faulty reading. Samsung's diagnostic quick guide for older models gives the same causes with a 122°F upper limit. The ice maker uses this sensor to judge when the water in the tray has frozen, so a failed sensor can leave the ice maker idle or harvesting at the wrong time.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Write down the code and your full model number. Samsung asks you not to unplug the fridge or keep pressing panel buttons to make an error code go away unless its steps tell you to, because that makes it harder for a technician to diagnose. Family Hub owners can see current and past codes under Apps, Fridge Manager, Fridge Settings, Self Check.
  2. Check the food. A 14E is an ice maker problem, so the fridge and freezer should still be at their set temperatures. If they're warming up too, mention that when you book service, since it points to a bigger problem.
  3. Open the ice room and look for heavy frost or ice built up around the ice maker and bucket. Samsung's service bulletin for French-door ice makers lists 14C among the codes to check when the ice room has frozen up.
  4. Don't try to melt a frozen ice room with a heat gun or hair dryer. Samsung's bulletin warns that it can melt the plastic liner and cause permanent damage, and its technicians use the fridge's forced defrost mode and a steamer instead.
  5. Don't pull the ice maker apart or unplug its connector yourself. The sensor check is a voltage reading at the main board, which needs the fridge powered on with covers off.
  6. Request service from Samsung or an authorized service center, giving them the code, model number and whether ice is still being made. Until it's fixed you can turn the ice maker off and use ice trays.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • Any time 14E or 14C appears; Samsung treats it as a service code rather than a user reset.
  • Checking the sensor circuit at the main board. On the RF28HDEDB the service manual's test is a voltage reading between two main board connector pins that should fall between 4.5 V and 1.0 V; a reading outside that points to the sensor, its wiring or the connector.
  • Clearing a frozen ice room with forced defrost and a steamer, as Samsung's bulletin describes, before replacing parts.
  • Replacing the ice maker or its sensor, or repairing the wiring, depending on what the test shows. Match any part to your full model number.
  • Checking the main board if the sensor and wiring test good.
  • The fridge is under warranty; Samsung warranty repairs need to go through a Samsung authorized service center.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

Ice maker assembly

Only after a technician confirms the sensor circuit is at fault. Samsung uses different ice makers on different models, so match the part to your full model number.
