Samsung Refrigerator Error Code 22E (22C): Fridge Fan Error (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 · Based on 5 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Samsung's US, Canada and Latin America error code guides all list 22E and 22C as a fridge fan error. Samsung Canada's support notes say the code means the evaporator fan motor isn't sending feedback to the main circuit board, and the fan's supply should read between 7 and 12 volts DC when a technician checks it. Samsung explains that its fan errors come up when the electronics don't sense the fan turning when it's supposed to be. That usually means ice has built up around the fan, often because a door was left open or a door gasket didn't seal, but it can also mean the fan motor itself has failed. Samsung UK groups 21E, 22E and 22C together and says the fan may be frozen or jammed. The closely related 21E is the freezer fan error.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Take a photo of the code and note your model number first. Samsung asks you not to unplug the fridge or press buttons to clear a code unless its steps tell you to, because that makes diagnosis harder. For 22E, unplugging is part of Samsung's own fix.
  2. Move perishable food to a cooler or another fridge before you start the defrost.
  3. Unplug the refrigerator and leave the doors open for a few hours. Samsung Latin America suggests about 8 hours so any ice around the fan fully melts. Put towels down for the meltwater.
  4. While it defrosts, check that the door gaskets are clean and make full contact all the way around, and that nothing on the shelves stops the doors from closing.
  5. Plug the fridge back in, close the doors, and let it run normally. Don't overfill it so the doors can close completely.
  6. If you have a Family Hub model, you can view current and past codes with Self Check: open Apps, then Fridge Manager, Fridge Settings, Self Check, and Start.
  7. Don't chip at ice inside the fridge or open the rear panel to get at the fan. The fan sits behind the evaporator cover, and that's technician work.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • 22E or 22C comes back after a full defrost. Samsung says to request service.
  • The code returns quickly even though the doors are sealing properly, which points to a failed fan motor, wiring or board rather than ice.
  • The fridge section is warming up or you hear grinding, clicking or no fan sound at all from the fridge compartment.
  • Ice keeps building up behind the fridge panel, which can mean a defrost system problem a technician needs to check.
  • The fridge is still under warranty.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Fridge (evaporator) fan motor

Only if a technician confirms the fan motor has failed. Samsung fan motors are model-specific, so match the part number to your refrigerator's model number.

⚙

Refrigerator door gasket

If a torn or warped gasket keeps letting warm air in and icing the fan. Match it to your exact model and door.
