LG Refrigerator IF Error Code (Er IF, E IF): Ice Maker Fan Error (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
LG describes IF as an ice maker fan error. That fan moves cold air from the freezer to the ice maker, and the refrigerator has a sensor that detects when the fan is blocked. When the fan can't run, ice production slows or stops. LG Canada says the usual reason is frost or ice buildup around the fan, caused by doors that don't seal or close fully, putting hot food inside, or a door left open by accident (for example overnight), which lets moist air in to freeze. LG Canada groups IF with F1 on some models. LG USA's general error-code article also lists Er IF among codes that can point to a faulty component, control circuit or disconnected wire, and says to stop using the refrigerator and contact LG if the code keeps coming back after a reset. IF is different from IS (ice maker temperature sensor) and It (ice maker motor), which LG lists as separate codes.
Likely causes
- Frost or ice around the ice maker fan, locking the blade (LG's most common cause)
- A door gasket that doesn't seal, or doors that are misaligned or don't close fully, letting humid air in
- Hot food placed in the refrigerator, adding moisture that freezes
- A door left open by accident, for example overnight
- A failed ice maker fan motor, its wiring, or the control circuit, if the code returns after a full defrost
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Reset the power: unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker, wait a few minutes (LG Canada says 2 minutes, LG USA says about 5), then plug it back in and see if IF clears.
- If IF comes back, move the food to a cooler or backup refrigerator and empty the ice bin.
- Unplug the refrigerator, leave the doors open and let it sit unplugged for at least 8 hours so the frost around the fan melts. Put towels inside and on the floor to catch the water.
- After the defrost, wipe out any remaining water with a dry towel, plug it back in and give it 24 to 48 hours to return to normal operation and start making ice again.
- To keep it from coming back, check the door seals (especially on French-door models) for tears or damage, make sure the refrigerator is level so the doors close fully, keep the vents clear, and let hot food cool before putting it in.
🛠 When to call a pro
- IF comes back after a full 8-hour manual defrost. LG says the unit may then need professional repair.
- The code keeps returning after resets. LG USA says to stop using the refrigerator and contact LG, as it may mean a faulty internal circuit or wire.
- The ice maker fan, its wiring or the control board need testing or replacement. LG warns owners not to disassemble the refrigerator or replace internal parts themselves.
- The refrigerator is still under warranty. Use LG's Request a Repair page or LG support rather than opening it up.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Refrigerator door gasket
If a torn or damaged gasket keeps letting moist air in and frosting the ice maker fan. Match it to your exact model and door.
