GE Dishwasher FTD (F56): Failure to Drain (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
GE Appliances lists FTD or F56 as 'Failure to drain' and explains it simply: the dishwasher did not drain. GE's fix is to check the drain hose, the air gap, and the disposer, then work through its Not Draining checklist. Some water in the bottom is normal: on models without an Ultra Fine filter, 1 to 2 cups of clean water covering the bottom of the tub is expected, and on models with an Ultra Fine filter, water in the filter area is normal but it shouldn't cover the tub floor. Standing water above that, plus the FTD code, means the drain path is blocked or the drain system isn't working.
Likely causes
- Clogged Fine or Ultra Fine filters, or food, paper, or a large object blocking the sump area at the back of the tub floor
- A kinked or blocked drain hose under the sink (GE notes that reusing old, worn hoses promotes kinking)
- A clogged kitchen sink drain or a garbage disposer full of food waste
- A blocked air gap on the countertop
- A newly installed disposer with its drain plug (knockout) still in place
- No high drain loop when there's no air gap; GE requires the hose to loop up to 32 inches above the floor
- Less commonly, a failed drain pump or control fault, which needs a technician
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Turn the dishwasher off. If you'll reach under the sink or into the base, switch off its breaker first.
- Remove and clean the filters in the bottom of the tub (Fine and Ultra Fine filters on models that have them): rinse them, scrub off food with a soft brush, and reinstall them firmly.
- Clear the sump area at the back of the tub floor of paper, labels, glass, bones, noodles, or other debris.
- Run the garbage disposer with cold water to clear the shared drain. Never put your hand into the disposer.
- If you have a countertop air gap, pull off its cap and clean out the buildup inside.
- Under the sink, check the drain hose for kinks or crushing and make sure the sink drain itself isn't clogged.
- If the disposer was just installed or replaced, confirm the drain plug inside its dishwasher inlet was knocked out, following the disposer's installation instructions.
- With no air gap, check that the drain hose rises in a high loop secured under the counter, at the height your dishwasher's installation instructions give (32 inches from the floor on GE built-ins).
- Don't pour drain cleaner into the dishwasher; GE specifically advises against it.
- Restore power and run a short rinse or drain cycle. If FTD comes back, stop and schedule service.
🛠 When to call a pro
- FTD returns after the filters, sump, hose, air gap, sink drain, and disposer are all clear (GE says service will be needed at that point).
- You hear the dishwasher trying to drain but water stays, or you hear nothing at all during the drain, which points to the drain pump or its control.
- The drain hose needs replacing or rerouting behind the dishwasher, which means pulling the unit out of the cabinet.
- It's a portable GE dishwasher connected to the sink with the unicouple; GE says those need service.
- You see water leaking onto the floor along with the code.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
GE dishwasher drain hose (10 ft WD24X34763 or 12 ft WD24X10065, per GE)
GE built-ins use a 5/8 in inside-diameter hose; replace a kinked or worn one rather than reusing it.

Only if the filter is cracked or warped; most just need cleaning.

Needed only if a technician confirms the pump has failed.

Replace if the cap is cracked or the air gap stays clogged.
