GE Dishwasher Error Code H2O (H20): Not Getting Enough Water (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 · Based on 5 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

GE says the H2O code indicates a low water situation. The fill phase of the cycle runs on a timer, so if the water supply is off or the pressure is too low, the dishwasher doesn't get enough water in the time allowed and shows H2O. GE lists three common situations: the dishwasher is being run for the very first time, plumbing work was just done in the house, or the supply valve under the sink was recently turned off. GE also says a dishwasher that isn't level can make the water level read low, and that if H2O shows up only during the 1-Hour Wash cycle, service should be scheduled (other cycles can be used until then). GE dishwashers need a hot water supply pressure of 20 to 120 PSI. On models that measure water level with a pressure sensor, a dirty or failed sensor can also cause a false low-water reading.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Find the hot water valve under the sink nearest the dishwasher and turn it completely on. GE says this is the most likely fix, especially after a first run or plumbing work.
  2. Check the supply line behind the kick plate and under the sink for kinks, crushing or sharp bends.
  3. Check the water flow. With the water off, disconnect the supply line from the dishwasher, put the end in a bucket, and briefly turn the water back on. You should see a strong, steady flow. A weak flow points to the valve, the line, or the house plumbing rather than the dishwasher.
  4. Make sure the dishwasher is level front to back and side to side, and adjust the leveling legs if it leans.
  5. Clear the code by selecting another cycle, then putting the option back to your desired setting, and run it again.
  6. If H2O appears only on the 1-Hour Wash cycle, GE says to schedule service and keep using other cycles in the meantime.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • The water valve is fully open, the line isn't kinked, household pressure is adequate, the dishwasher is level, and H2O keeps coming back. GE recommends a service call at that point.
  • H2O appears only during the 1-Hour Wash cycle.
  • You suspect the water inlet valve, pressure sensor, wiring or control board, which means removing panels and working near water and 120V wiring.
  • The dishwasher also shows PrS, which GE says means the pressure sensor is sending an invalid signal, usually a harness or sensor issue.
  • The dishwasher is under warranty. Schedule GE Appliances service instead of opening it.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Water inlet valve

Replace if water flow to the dishwasher is good but little or no water gets in. Match the part to the model number on the tub's edge.

Braided dishwasher supply line

Replace a kinked, crushed or corroded supply line.

⚙

Water level pressure sensor

On models that use one, a clogged or failed sensor can give a false low-water reading. Confirm the part for your exact model.
