GE Dishwasher IH (1H) Code: Delay Start Is Set (How to Cancel It)

Reviewed 2026-10-23 · Based on 3 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

GE Appliances' dishwasher fault-code list puts 'Number + H (Ex. 1H)' at the top and defines it as the dishwasher being in Delay Start mode. The first character is the number 1, not the letter I, which is why people search for 'IH'. GE's Delay Start article explains that on touch-control models each press of the Delay Start pad adds one hour of delay (1 to 14 hours depending on model), the display shows the hours as a number plus H, the control counts down by itself, and the programmed cycle starts when the countdown ends. Opening or unlatching the door does not cancel the delay. Newer GE models call the feature Delay Hours; most allow up to 8 hours and some up to 12. On mechanical-dial models there is no H display; you turn the dial to the 1 to 6 hour delay positions instead.

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Look closely at the display: if it reads 1H, 2H, 3H or similar, the dishwasher is simply waiting to start, not reporting an error.
  2. To keep the delay, close and latch the door and leave it; the cycle starts on its own when the countdown reaches zero.
  3. To cancel on models with a Delay Start pad, press the pad repeatedly until the hours indicator goes off.
  4. On newer models with a Delay Hours pad there is no Off setting, so keep pressing and releasing Delay Hours until no number shows.
  5. On most models you can also press and hold Start or Start/Reset for 3 seconds, which cancels the set cycle, including the delay.
  6. Select your cycle and options again, press Start, and close and latch the door to run it right away.
  7. On a dial-control model, turn the dial off the Delay Start hour positions to the cycle you want.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • The H display won't go away even after you cancel the delay and hold Start or Start/Reset for 3 seconds.
  • The countdown finishes but the dishwasher never starts its cycle.
  • The dishwasher sets a delay by itself, or the control pads don't respond to presses.
  • The dishwasher is under warranty. Contact GE Appliances service with your model number before replacing any control parts.

Only if a technician confirms the controls have failed. Canceling Delay Start fixes 1H in nearly every case.
