KitchenAid Dishwasher F8 E4 (8-4 Flashes): Water in the Drip Tray (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
KitchenAid's dishwasher error code table lists F8E4 as "Water Detected in Drip Tray" and points to three checks: empty the drip tray, make sure the float switch is connected, and check the water connections for leaks. KitchenAid's help article for the flashing-light version (8 flashes, pause, 4 flashes, pause, repeat) gives the same F8E4 steps, so 8-4 and F8E4 are the same code. A foam float sits in the plastic tray under the tub; when water collects there, the float rises and opens its switch. KitchenAid says the drain sequence then begins and machine operation is prevented. Whirlpool's technical manual W11499711 for KitchenAid and Maytag 24 inch microfiltration dishwashers calls it Function 8 (Inlet Water), Error 4 (Overfill switch open), with causes that range from a spill or suds to a fill valve stuck open or a drain fault. Emptying the tray clears the code, but if the source of the water isn't fixed it will come back.
Likely causes
- A leak at the water supply connection, often a loose fitting or an unseated rubber washer after a new installation
- Too many suds from dish soap or too much detergent pushing water out of the tub
- The float switch is unplugged, or its wire was pulled or damaged during installation
- The float is stuck up by debris, holding the switch open
- The dishwasher isn't level and tilts forward, so water surges into the drip tray (per Whirlpool's technical manual)
- A drain problem, if F9E1 or F9E2 was also recorded
- A fill valve stuck open, often recorded together with F8E5
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher. KitchenAid says to press Cancel once to silence the alarm, keep the door closed and leave the power on so the drain sequence can run.
- Open the door and look for suds. If there are any, let them settle, and use only detergent made for automatic dishwashers, never dish soap.
- Check the water supply connection. Make sure the rubber washer is seated, hand-tighten the 3/4 inch (19 mm) 90-degree elbow fitting to avoid cross-threading, then add 1/4 to 1/2 turn with pliers if needed. The fill hose should exit at the rear left of the unit.
- With the power off, remove the lower access panel. If there's water in the drip tray, press the snap on each side of the tray toward the center and pull it gently toward you. Don't pull too far or too hard, since the float switch wire is still attached. Empty and dry the tray.
- Make sure the float switch is connected: align the connector with its housing and push until the locking tab shows over the back of the connector. Also make sure the power cord or wire doesn't touch the motor or the bottom of the tub.
- Reinstall the tray and panel, restore power and water, then press Cancel once to silence the tone and again to clear the code. Run a short cycle and watch for leaks.
๐ When to call a pro
- F8E4 comes back after you've emptied the tray, checked the supply connection and ruled out suds, so the leak source is still there.
- The tub keeps filling with the dishwasher off, or F8E5 also appears, which points to a fill valve stuck open.
- F9E1 or F9E2 was recorded with it, suggesting a drain fault that needs diagnosis.
- The float switch or its harness tests bad. Whirlpool's technical manual has the checks for technicians.
- Water is reaching the floor or cabinets. Shut off the water and schedule service right away.
- The dishwasher was professionally installed or is under warranty. Contact KitchenAid or schedule service rather than opening it up.
