Maytag Dryer AF Code (F4E3): Restricted Airflow, Check the Vent (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Maytag's error code chart lists AF (or F4E3) as restricted airflow, meaning the lint screen or vent is clogged, or the vent is crushed, kinked or has too many turns. It's a warning rather than a shutdown: the dryer continues to run while the code is showing, and touching any key clears it from the display and returns to the estimated time remaining. On models with a Check Vent light, Maytag explains that the dryer checks airflow during the sensing phase at the start of an automatic cycle and lights the indicator for the whole cycle if it finds a blocked vent or low airflow. Either way, the code will keep coming back until the airflow problem is fixed. Poor airflow traps hot, wet air in the dryer, so you'll usually also see long dry times, a dryer that feels very warm on the outside, steam or moisture inside, or very little lint on the lint screen.
Likely causes
- A lint screen that's full or coated (dryer sheet residue can block it even when it looks clean)
- Lint buildup inside the vent run from the dryer to the outside
- A crushed or kinked transition hose behind the dryer, often from pushing the dryer too close to the wall
- A clogged or blocked outside vent hood: lint, a bird or rodent nest, or landscaping in the way
- A vent run that's too long or has too many elbows for the vent type, per the installation instructions
- Plastic or foil vent material, which sags and crushes easily
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Touch any key to clear AF from the display; the dryer keeps running. The goal is to stop it from coming back.
- Clean the lint screen. Maytag recommends doing this after every load.
- Pull the dryer out (unplug it first, and on a gas dryer be careful not to strain the gas line) and check the hose behind it. If it's crushed or kinked, replace it with 4-inch (102 mm) rigid or flexible metal vent, and leave at least 4 inches between the dryer and the wall when you push it back.
- Check the outside vent hood: it should be free of lint, nests and plants. Maytag's airflow test is to run the dryer for 5 to 10 minutes and hold your hand under the outside hood. If the air movement is weaker than a hair dryer on high, clean the full length of the vent and the hood.
- Clean the vent run from the dryer to the wall and on to the outside. A vent brush kit handles most runs; Maytag notes that cleaning the house venting isn't covered by warranty and isn't done by an appliance technician, so long or hidden runs may need a vent cleaning service.
- Make sure the run is as short as possible with as few 90ยฐ elbows as possible, and within the length limits in your dryer's installation instructions.
- Restart with a Timed Dry heated cycle. If AF keeps coming back, Maytag says to have the entire home vent run cleaned by a venting specialist. Maytag also sells a dryer vent test kit (part W11224254) through Customer Service to check whether the venting is restricted.
- Going forward, Maytag says the outside venting should be cleaned every one to two years, or sooner if dry times get longer.
๐ When to call a pro
- Professional cleaning and inspection of the whole vent run, especially long runs, runs through walls or ceilings, and roof vents.
- Rerouting or replacing a vent run that's too long, has too many elbows, or uses plastic or foil duct.
- If AF keeps appearing after the vent tests clear, an appliance technician can check the dryer's own airflow path; Maytag says codes that alternate F# and E# need service.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Dryer vent cleaning brush kit
Flexible rods with a brush that attach to a drill, for cleaning long duct runs from inside or outside.
Search eBay โ4-inch rigid or semi-rigid metal dryer duct
