Haier Washer E1 Error Code: Won't Drain or Drains Too Slowly
What the code means
Haier uses E1 for a drainage failure on both its top loaders and many of its front loaders. Haier's Australian HWT10MW2 top-loader manual lists "The machine does not drain or drain slowly. The display shows E1" with the check "Is the drain hose blocked?" and the fix "Remove the blockage. Push the Start/Pause button once." Haier India's top-load troubleshooting page adds "Is the drain hose set too high?" Haier's drain-failure article (published by Haier India and Haier Algeria) gives three reasons: on machines with a drain pump inside, the drain hose is placed too high so water drains too slowly or not at all; the hose is blocked or pressed; or the hose has been extended too long (original plus extension should be under 3 m). For front loaders, the Haier HWF75DW1/HWF85DW1 user manual lists "E1 Drainage error, water not emptied. Check drain hose for blockage and that it is properly installed," and Haier Bangladesh says drum washers can show E1 or CLr FLtr for the same drainage error, fixed by cleaning the pump filter and checking the hose. Newer Haier front loaders (like the HWF85AN1 family) show CLr FLtr instead of E1, with a 6-minute drain limit.
Likely causes
- Drain hose blocked, kinked, crushed behind the machine, or pinched under a foot
- Drain hose set at the wrong height: on machines with an internal drain pump, Haier says an upper drain outlet should sit 80 to 100 cm high, and too high stops it draining
- On top loaders that drain by gravity through a lower outlet, the hose end raised above about 10 cm
- Drain hose extended too long (Haier says the original hose plus any extension should be less than 3 m)
- Front loaders: the pump filter behind the small cover at the bottom front is clogged with lint, coins, hair pins or socks
- If the hose and filter are clear, a failed drain pump, drain valve or control fault, which needs a technician
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Unplug the washer before checking anything, as Haier advises.
- Follow the drain hose from the machine to the standpipe or sink. Straighten kinks, pull the machine forward if the hose is crushed against the wall, and clear any blockage at the hose end.
- Check the hose height for your type of machine: for a pumped outlet (most front loaders and many top loaders), the hose end should be 80 to 100 cm above the floor; for a lower, gravity-drain outlet, Haier says under 10 cm.
- Make sure the hose end isn't pushed deep into the standpipe or sitting below water in a sink.
- If you've added an extension hose, keep the total length under 3 m.
- On a front loader, put a towel and shallow tray under the pump filter cover at the bottom front, drain the water through the small emergency hose if there is one, unscrew the filter and clean it, then screw it back in tightly.
- Plug back in and press Start/Pause once (on a top loader, Haier also says opening and closing the lid once lets it carry on). Run a Spin or Drain program to check it empties.
๐ When to call a pro
- E1 comes back with the hose straight, at the right height, and (on front loaders) a clean pump filter: Haier says to contact after-sales service.
- You can hear the drain pump humming but no water moves, or you hear nothing at all when it should drain, which points to the pump or its wiring.
- Water is left standing in the drum and the door won't unlock; drain it through the pump filter first, carefully, since the water may be hot.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Washer drain hose (or extension kit)
Replace a cracked or permanently kinked hose. Keep the total length under 3 m, as Haier advises.
