Haier Washer E2 Error Code: Lid or Door Not Closed or Locked

Reviewed 2026-10-25 · Based on 5 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Haier uses E2 for the same basic safety check across its washers: the machine won't fill, wash or spin unless the lid or door is confirmed closed (and, on front loaders, locked). Haier's top-loader owner's manuals (for example the Australian HWT10MW2 and New Zealand HWT80MW2 manuals) list "The machine stops running. The display shows E2" with the cause "The top lid is not closed" and the fix "Close the top lid. Push the Start/Pause button once." Haier Philippines adds that opening the top lid while the drum is spinning (or, on its "double drive" models, while washing) makes the drum stop, the control beep and E2 appear, and that closing the lid clears E2 so the machine carries on. For front-load style machines, Haier Appliances' U.S. error code chart for the Haier combination washer/dryer defines E2 as "Cannot lock the door after 20 seconds" with the solution "Service is required," and another Haier Philippines article says that if E2 still shows after the door is re-closed properly, it may be an electrical component failure that needs a service call. Note that on some Haier combination units the separate code Err1 means door not closed and Err2 means not draining, so check which style your display uses; this page covers the plain E2 code.

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Close the lid or door firmly until it latches, then press Start/Pause once. On Haier top loaders this is the fix Haier's manuals give, and the cycle should resume.
  2. Open it again and check for clothing, the gasket, or anything else caught in the door or lid. Push the load fully into the drum and close it again.
  3. Look at the latch and the striker on the lid or door for damage, sticky detergent residue or a bent hook, and wipe the area clean.
  4. Don't open the lid while the drum is spinning. Haier says opening it mid-spin (or mid-wash on double-drive models) stops the drum and shows E2 by design.
  5. If E2 is stuck on screen, unplug the washer for a minute, plug it back in, close the door firmly and try a short cycle such as Rinse/Spin.
  6. If the door won't lock or E2 returns every cycle even though the door is clearly closed and nothing is in the way, stop there: Haier treats that as a part failure.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • E2 keeps returning with the lid or door fully closed and nothing caught: Haier says it may be an electrical component failure (lid switch, door lock or control) and to contact service.
  • On a Haier front-load or combination washer/dryer, Haier's U.S. chart lists E2 (cannot lock the door after 20 seconds) as "Service is required." In the U.S. you can schedule Haier service at haierappliances.com or call 1-877-337-3639.
  • The door latch or hook is physically broken, or the door won't latch at all.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Door lock / lid switch assembly

Only after confirming the door closes properly and nothing is caught. Match the part to your exact Haier model number; on a front loader, have a technician confirm the lock is the failed part first.
