KitchenAid Dishwasher 7-1 Flashes (F7 E1): Wash Motor Not Running (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

KitchenAid's guide to reading dishwasher error codes explains that on models with only lights, the first set of Clean light flashes is the Function (F) number and the second set, after a short pause of about 1 to 2 seconds, is the Error (E) number. KitchenAid uses this exact pattern as its example: 7 flashes, a pause, 1 flash, then a longer pause before it repeats, is an F7-E1 error code. KitchenAid's own error table doesn't list F7E1 by name, but it lists the related F7E2 as a wash motor error and says to cycle power and schedule service if it returns. Whirlpool's technical manual W11480208 for Whirlpool, JennAir, Brastemp and KitchenAid 24 inch filtration dishwashers lists "7 - Wash Motor, 1 - Motor not running", caused by a loose connection in the motor circuit, a faulty wash motor, or the control's motor drive or sense circuit. Technical manual W11499711 for KitchenAid and Maytag 24 inch microfiltration dishwashers calls the same code "Wash Motor Failure" and adds that if F1E1 isn't also recorded, the wash motor or its connectors are the likely problem, while F1E1 alongside it points to the control. The microfiltration manual also notes that the control uses the wash motor signal to confirm draining, so a failed wash motor can make the dishwasher log a drain fault (F9E1) too. Some older Whirlpool-built dishwashers use 7-1 for a heating problem instead; see our Whirlpool F7 E1 page for that version.

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Count the flashes carefully: 7 flashes, a short pause, 1 flash, then a longer pause before it repeats. On models with a display, the code shows as F7E1.
  2. Reset the control the way KitchenAid describes: unplug the dishwasher for 30 seconds, or turn off its breaker for 30 seconds if it's hard-wired, then restore power.
  3. Remove and clean the filter under running water, and check the sump below it for glass, bones, labels, or broken rack pieces that could jam the wash pump.
  4. Make sure the spray arms spin freely and their holes aren't plugged, and that nothing tall in the lower rack is blocking them.
  5. Run a short cycle and listen. A normal wash sounds like strong spraying. If it hums, starts and stops repeatedly, or flashes 7-1 again, the wash motor circuit needs testing.
  6. If you're handy and the power is off, check that the wash motor harness connector at the control board is fully seated. Whirlpool's manuals reserve live voltage checks for authorized technicians.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • The 7-1 flashes come back after a 30-second power reset and a filter and spray arm cleaning.
  • The wash motor needs resistance checks at the control board connector. On the filtration platform, Whirlpool's manual gives 16 to 18 ohms for the variable speed wash motor between P5-1 and P5-2.
  • F1E1 is also recorded, which Whirlpool's microfiltration manual says likely means the control board, not the motor, needs replacing.
  • The dishwasher also shows a drain error (F9E1) or leaves water in the tub, since a failed wash motor can cause a drain fault on these models.
  • The dishwasher is under warranty. Contact KitchenAid at 1-800-422-1230 or schedule service rather than opening it up.
