KitchenAid Dishwasher 6-4 (F6 E4): Overfill Float Switch Open (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-24 ยท Based on 4 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

KitchenAid's Product Help page for F6E4 gives the potential cause as the water float switch and the troubleshooting as leveling the dishwasher and cycling power. It explains that a dishwasher that isn't level can actuate the overfill (float) switch and trigger the code. Sears PartsDirect's KitchenAid HE dishwasher code list describes 6-4 or F6E4 as "The float switch is open" and says to check whether the overfill float switch is stuck or an item is stuck under it, and whether the water inlet valve fully shuts off the water when the dishwasher is off. The 6 is the function code (Inlet Water) and the 4 is the error, which is why models without a display blink the Clean light 6 times, pause 2 seconds, then blink 4 times. Newer KitchenAid and Whirlpool microfiltration dishwashers list the same overfill-switch-open condition under Function 8 (Inlet Water), so on those models it shows as F8 E4 instead; if your display shows F8 E4 or 8-4, see our F8 E4 page. Whirlpool's technical manual for those newer models lists the technician causes of an open overfill switch: water in the leak pan, a stuck float, an unplugged switch, a fill valve stuck open, a drain problem, too many suds, and a unit tilted forward so water surges down the overfill funnels.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Press Cancel, then disconnect power for 30 seconds by unplugging the dishwasher or switching off its breaker. Restore power and see if the code clears; this is KitchenAid's first step.
  2. With power off, open the door and find the overfill float (the mushroom-shaped float on the tub floor). Press it up and down: it should move freely and you should hear the switch click. Remove anything stuck under or around it.
  3. Check the dishwasher is level side to side and front to back, and adjust the leveling legs if needed. KitchenAid says incorrect leveling can actuate the overfill switch.
  4. Look for suds in the tub. Use only automatic dishwasher detergent at the recommended amount, never dish soap, and wipe up any spilled or leaking rinse aid.
  5. Clean the filter and check that the dishwasher drains, so water isn't left standing in the tub.
  6. With the dishwasher off and the door closed for a while, open it and check whether water is slowly rising in the tub. If it is, the inlet valve isn't shutting off: turn off the water supply under the sink and call for service.
  7. Restore power and run a short cycle. If 6-4 returns right away with the float moving freely and the unit level, the switch or valve needs a technician.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • The code keeps coming back after the float is clear, the dishwasher is level and you've reset power.
  • Water rises in the tub while the dishwasher is off, which points to a water inlet valve that's stuck open. Shut off the water supply until it's fixed.
  • Water is in the leak pan under the tub or reaching the floor, which means removing the access panel and finding the leak.
  • Testing or replacing the overfill float switch or its wiring, which needs the lower access panel off and a meter.
  • The dishwasher is under warranty. Call KitchenAid at 1-800-422-1230 or schedule service rather than opening it up.
