LG Refrigerator CF E Error Code (Er CF, E CF): Condenser Fan Motor Error
What the code means
LG's US support pages describe CF as a Condenser Fan Motor Error: the fan in the machine compartment at the rear of the refrigerator, which carries heat away from the compressor and condenser, isn't operating normally. LG's digital and analog code page adds that no signal is detected from the fan motor, and that if the fan is blocked the compressor overworks, the inside temperature rises and cooling performance drops. LG notes that a power reset makes the code disappear, but it shows up again about 3 hours later if the fault is still there. On analog-display models without letters, LG says CF shows as the LEDs at 5°C, 3°C, 2°C and 1°C lit together. LG service manuals for several French-door models explain the logic: the main board drives the brushless (BLDC) condenser fan and watches for a feedback signal. With no feedback, it stops the fan for 10 seconds, powers it for 15 seconds, and repeats that three times before showing the error, then keeps retrying and clears the code by itself once the fan runs normally.
Likely causes
- A failed condenser fan motor, which LG says is the usual cause
- Something blocking the fan blade in the rear machine compartment, such as lint, pet hair, debris or a dislodged cover
- A fan motor that is stiff or seized; LG's service manuals say if the blade feels sticky when turned by hand, the motor should be replaced
- A loose or disconnected wire or connector between the fan motor and the main control board
- A main control board that isn't sending power or a drive signal to the fan, which LG lists as a less common cause
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its dedicated breaker, wait about 5 minutes, then restore power, as LG directs. Note that the code may clear and come back about 3 hours later if the fault is real.
- Pull the fridge out and listen at the back while the compressor is running. A warm compressor area with no fan sound points to the condenser fan.
- With the power off, remove the lower rear access panel (usually a few screws) and look for anything touching or wrapped around the fan blade, then vacuum dust and lint from the fan and condenser area.
- Still with the power off, gently turn the fan blade by hand. It should spin freely. LG's service manuals say a blade that feels sticky means the motor needs replacing.
- Check that the fan's wire connector is fully seated and the wires aren't pinched or broken, then put the panel back and restore power.
- Keep space around the back and sides of the fridge so the machine compartment can breathe, and keep food in a cooler if the fridge is losing temperature.
🛠 When to call a pro
- CF comes back after the 5-minute power reset. LG says the fridge then needs an LG service technician for an accurate diagnosis.
- The fan blade spins freely and the connector is seated but the fan still won't run. Telling a bad motor from a main board that isn't driving it takes live voltage checks on the board connector in test mode, which LG's service manuals reserve for technicians.
- The fridge or freezer is warming up. A compressor running without its fan can overheat, so get it looked at soon.
- The refrigerator is under warranty, so the visit and parts may be covered.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Condenser fan motor (exact part for your model)
Only if the fan is confirmed bad. LG fan motors are model-specific, so match the part number to your model number.
