LG Refrigerator Error Code FF (Er FF, E FF): Freezer Fan Motor Error (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 · Based on 5 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

LG describes FF as a freezer fan motor error: the control detects no signal from the fan motor. That fan circulates cold air through the freezer, and LG notes that when it is blocked the compressor works harder, temperatures rise and cooling suffers. LG says the most common reason is ice or frost around the fan that locks it in place, which often happens when the freezer is overpacked or the door hasn't been fully closed, letting humid outside air in. Codes look slightly different by model: Er FF, E FF, F, or on models without a digital code, a pattern of temperature LEDs (LG's list gives 7°C, 3°C, 2°C and 1°C lit for FF). A related code, Er rF or E rF, is the same problem with the refrigerator-compartment fan, and CF is the condenser fan at the back. If FF comes back after a full defrost, LG says the fan or its circuit needs a technician.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Reset the power first: unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker, wait about 5 minutes, and plug it back in. LG lists this as a first step, and a direct outlet is better than a power strip.
  2. If FF comes back, move the food to another refrigerator or an insulated cooler and put dry towels around the base to catch meltwater.
  3. Unplug the refrigerator and leave both the freezer and refrigerator doors fully open so the ice around the fan melts naturally. LG's current guidance is at least 24 hours, about a day in summer and up to three days in winter; an older LG code list says at least 8 hours, so give it longer if there's a lot of ice.
  4. Don't use a hair dryer or heat gun. LG warns heat can warp plastic parts and create a fire hazard.
  5. Once all the ice is gone, wipe the interior dry, plug it back in and allow 24 to 48 hours to reach normal temperatures.
  6. To keep it from returning, don't overpack the freezer, keep food away from the vents, and check the door gasket by closing the door on a sheet of paper. It should resist when you pull it out.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • FF returns after a full manual defrost. LG says the same code repeating needs an LG technician for an accurate diagnosis.
  • You can't afford to keep the refrigerator off and empty for one to three days. LG suggests requesting service if you're worried about the food.
  • The fan motor, its wiring or the main board need testing or replacement, which means removing the freezer's rear panel.
  • The refrigerator is still under warranty. Use LG service rather than opening it up.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Freezer (evaporator) fan motor

Only if FF keeps coming back after a full defrost and the fan is confirmed bad. LG fan motors are model-specific, so match the part number to your model.
