Samsung Washer Ur Error Code: Unbalanced Load Retry (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 · Based on 5 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Samsung's US error code list groups Ur with dc (on some models), Ub, U6, UE, 1 Ub and 1U6 under Unbalanced Load Error, but singles out Ur as different: a Ur code (Unbalanced Load Retry) means the washer is going to add more water, try to balance the load, and then try the spin cycle again. Samsung states plainly that Ur does not mean there is an issue with the washer and only tells you what's happening, though the cycle will take longer. The other codes in that group mean the washer will fail to complete the cycle because the load stayed unbalanced. So Ur on its own is informational; it becomes a problem only when the retries don't work and the washer stops with Ub, U6 or UE. Samsung Australia lists Ur alongside dc, UE, Ub and E4 and says to pause a top loader and redistribute the load, or on a front loader press Spin to drain and finish the cycle. If unbalance keeps happening, Samsung's spin-troubleshooting guide points to load size and makeup, the cycle chosen, the washer's level and footing, a clogged pump filter (the washer has to drain before it can spin), and a weight-sensor calibration on models that have it.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. If Ur shows and the washer is still running, let it work: Samsung says it is adding water and retrying the spin, and the cycle will just take longer.
  2. If it keeps retrying or switches to Ub, U6 or UE, pause the cycle, open the door, untangle the laundry and spread it evenly around the drum. Close the door and press Start.
  3. For a small load, add a few more items or lower the spin speed. For sheets and blankets, spread them out by hand and consider a lower spin speed. Samsung says not to wash floor mats or pillows.
  4. Check load size against Samsung's guide: a small load is 3 to 5 pounds (about one-third full) and a large load is 6 to 16 pounds (about three-quarters full).
  5. Pick the cycle that matches what you're washing; Samsung notes the wrong cycle can cause errors, poor performance, or both.
  6. Level the washer: rock it gently from opposite sides, and if it rocks, turn the leveling feet (clockwise lowers, counterclockwise raises) and tighten the lock nuts on front loaders. It needs a firm, level floor without carpet.
  7. On a front loader, clean the pump filter behind the small bottom-front door: drain the water through the rubber drain hose into a pan, twist the filter out counterclockwise, brush it clean, check the impeller behind it, and twist it back in. Samsung recommends this about once a month or every 40 washes.
  8. If your model has calibration mode, run it with the drum empty: on many models you hold Temp. and Delay End for 3 seconds until Cb appears, and the tub rocks for 1 to 3 minutes before showing En, End or 0. Check your user manual, because button combinations vary and some models don't have it.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • Ur and then Ub, U6 or UE keep coming back with normal, balanced loads on a level washer with a clean pump filter.
  • The tub doesn't move at all when you try calibration mode; Samsung says to request service.
  • The washer bangs, walks or shakes hard even with a balanced load.
  • The washer is under warranty. Request service from Samsung instead of opening it yourself.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

Anti-skid / anti-vibration washer pads

Can help on slippery floors, which Samsung says can cause unbalanced load errors.
