Frigidaire Washer E3 Error Code: Lid Open or Lid Lock Failed (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-23 ยท Based on 4 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Frigidaire's support article for top-loading washers says Error Code E3, which some models show as code 3, means the wash lid is either open or the lid lock failed. The washer locks the lid for safety during the final spin and won't drain, spin or start while the lid is open, so it stops and shows E3 when it can't confirm a closed, locked lid. The error table in Frigidaire's top-load Use & Care guide (A29259301) gives the same cause, the lid is open, and the same fixes: close the lid, level the washer, and if the lock or circuit board (PCB) has failed, call service. That guide prints its code column as images, so the row is matched to E3 by its position after the long-fill (E1) and slow-drain (E2) rows and by its description matching Frigidaire's E3 article. This page covers top-load models; Frigidaire front-load washers use two-digit door codes in the E4x range, which are different errors.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Press Pause or turn the washer off and wait for the basket to stop completely. Never reach into a moving basket, and don't force open a locked lid.
  2. Open the lid and look for clothes, a sock or a towel caught at the edge or near the lock. Push the load down below the rim.
  3. Close the lid firmly and completely, then press Start again.
  4. Check that the washer is level front to back and side to side and doesn't rock on its legs. Adjust the leveling legs per your installation instructions and tighten the lock nuts.
  5. Dry the area around the lid opening and the underside of the lid; Frigidaire's care guide says these should be dry before the lid is closed.
  6. If the display shows a lid code while Child Lock is on and the lid was raised, that is a separate Child Lock code in the Use & Care guide; turn off Child Lock as your guide describes.
  7. Watch the lid when you press Start. If it closes fully but never locks, stop there: Frigidaire says the lid lock or circuit board may have failed, which needs service.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • The lid closes fully and the washer is level, but E3 comes back or the lid never locks after Start.
  • The lid lock looks broken, missing or damaged. Frigidaire's guide says not to run the washer if the safety lid lock is missing, damaged or working improperly, and never to bypass it.
  • Water is left in the tub or the drain and spin didn't happen; the guide lists a lid lock malfunction as a cause and says to call an authorized servicer.
  • The washer was installed within the past 30 days: Frigidaire says to go back to your installer first.
  • For units installed more than 30 days ago, Frigidaire says to contact them to schedule service (1-800-944-9044 in the US).
