LG Washer Error Code UE: Unbalanced Load (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
LG says the UE/Ub code appears when laundry is stuck to one side of the drum and stays unbalanced even after the washer tries to untangle it, so the drum can't spin at full speed. On LG top loaders, a lowercase uE shows while the washer adds water, agitates to separate the items, drains and tries to spin again. After 3 failed attempts it switches to uppercase UE, meaning it needs your help. LG names three main triggers: how the washer is leveled, the type and spread of the load, and the cycle selected. If UE shows up even during an empty Rinse & Spin cycle, LG says the washer needs repair.
Likely causes
- Laundry bunched to one side of the drum, or large items like sheets and blankets tangled together
- A single heavy or bulky item (pillow, rug, comforter, mat) with nothing to balance it
- Too small a load (it can't spread evenly) or too large a load (it can't move freely). LG says the drum works best about 2/3 full
- Wrong cycle for the load, such as washing a duvet on a normal cycle instead of the Bulky or Duvet cycle
- Washer not level or rocking on its feet, or sliding on a slippery floor
- Worn or broken shock absorbers (front loaders) or suspension rods (top loaders), which let the tub move too much
- A failed hall sensor (rotor position sensor) on the motor, so the washer can't read the drum's speed and position correctly
- Less commonly, a control board fault
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Pause the washer, open it, and spread the laundry evenly around the drum. Untangle sheets and large items, then restart the cycle.
- Fix the load size. Add a few items to a very small load, or take some out of an overstuffed one. Aim for about 2/3 of the drum.
- For pillows, rugs, comforters and blankets, use the Bulky/Large or Duvet cycle. For small loads, LG suggests lowering the spin speed (Low or No Spin).
- Don't machine-wash items LG warns against, such as rubber-backed mats, carpets, electric blankets and waterproof items. For pillows and cushions, wash only the covers.
- Check leveling. Push on each corner of the washer. If it rocks, use a wrench to adjust the leveling legs until it sits level and firm, as close to the floor as practical. Tighten the lock nuts. On a slippery floor, LG suggests anti-skid pads.
- Run LG's test: empty the drum and run a Rinse & Spin cycle (about 20 minutes). If UE appears with nothing inside, the washer needs service. If it doesn't, the problem was the load, the leveling or the cycle.
- With the washer unplugged, push down on the tub and let go. It should settle quickly without bouncing over and over. A bouncy tub or loud banging during spin points to worn shock absorbers or suspension rods.
🛠 When to call a pro
- UE shows up during an empty Rinse & Spin cycle. LG says the washer needs repair at that point.
- The shock absorbers, suspension rods or springs are worn and you aren't comfortable taking panels off and supporting the tub.
- You suspect the hall sensor or the motor. Getting to the sensor usually means removing the back panel and partly taking the motor apart.
- The washer still bangs or walks across the floor after the loading and leveling fixes.
- The washer is under warranty. Schedule LG service instead of opening it.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Shock absorbers (front loaders)
Replace worn or leaking ones as a set. Part numbers vary by model; 383EER3001J is one LG kit. Match it to your model number before ordering.
[affiliate link slot: AFFILIATE_SLOT_SHOCKS]Suspension rods / springs (top loaders)
Usually replaced all four at once if any are worn or broken.
[affiliate link slot: AFFILIATE_SLOT_SUSPENSION]Hall sensor (rotor position sensor)
Inexpensive, but replacing it means taking the motor apart. Test it first, or have a pro do it.
[affiliate link slot: AFFILIATE_SLOT_HALL_SENSOR]Anti-skid / anti-vibration washer pads
Helps on slippery floors, which LG specifically recommends.
