Whirlpool Oven F3 E0: Oven Temperature Sensor Open (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

Whirlpool's Product Help pages for ranges and wall ovens say F3 E0 means there may be a problem with the oven temperature sensor, the control, or the associated wiring (on wall ovens, Whirlpool names the upper oven temperature sensor). Whirlpool's service tech sheets are more specific: in the F3 family, F3 E0 is an open oven sensor and F3 E1 is a shorted sensor, with E2 and E3 used for oven over-temperature. Tech sheet W11508780 lists F3E0 as "Oven sensor opened". Older tech sheet 8302066 gives the threshold: the control flags F3 E0 when the sensor reads about 2,875 ohms or more, against a normal reading of about 1,080 ohms at 70°F (about 1,654 ohms at 350°F, rising roughly 2 ohms per degree F). In other words, the control sees resistance far too high, which is what a broken sensor, a broken wire or an unplugged connector looks like. Newer Whirlpool tech sheets list the sensor as 1,000 to 1,200 ohms at room temperature. With the sensor reading wrong, the oven can't regulate its temperature, so it usually stops heating until the fault is fixed.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Turn off the oven's circuit breaker(s) for one minute, turn them back on, and watch the display for one minute. If F3 E0 doesn't come back, check that the oven heats normally. This is Whirlpool's own reset.
  2. If the code returns, stop using the oven until it's fixed, since the control can't read the oven temperature.
  3. With the breaker off, look at the sensor probe on the back wall of the oven cavity. Make sure it isn't bent or damaged and its mounting screws are tight.
  4. If you're comfortable with a multimeter, and still with power off, remove the sensor's mounting screws, pull the lead forward and unplug the sensor connector. Measure across the sensor's two pins. Whirlpool's tech sheets give about 1,000 to 1,200 ohms at room temperature (about 1,080 ohms at 70°F). A reading of thousands of ohms or no reading at all (open) matches F3 E0.
  5. Inspect the connector and harness for burned, broken or pinched wires and push the connector together firmly.
  6. Replace the sensor if it reads open or far out of range, using the part number for your model.
  7. Restore power and run a bake cycle. If the sensor and wiring test good and F3 E0 keeps returning, the wiring back to the control or the oven control itself is the next suspect.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • F3 E0 returns after the one-minute breaker reset and you'd rather not open the oven or use a meter.
  • The sensor tests good but the code persists, which points to the harness behind the oven or the electronic oven control.
  • The oven overheats or keeps heating when it shouldn't. Turn the breaker off and keep it off until it's serviced.
  • A built-in wall oven has to be pulled from the cabinet to reach the wiring or control.
  • The oven is still under warranty. Use Whirlpool's contact or schedule-service options instead of opening it.
