GE Oven F9 Error Code: Door Lock Circuit Fault (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

GE's fault-code chart for ranges and wall ovens defines F9 as "a component has failed somewhere in the door lock circuit." On self-cleaning GE ovens, a small motor drives a latch that locks the door for self-clean, and switches on the lock assembly tell the control whether the latch is locked or unlocked. If the control drives the motor and doesn't see the expected switch signal, or the switches report a position that doesn't make sense (for example locked during normal baking, or unlocked at self-clean temperatures), it sets F9 and stops the oven. AppliancePartsPros' GE range guide describes exactly that: the latch reading unlocked when it should be locked during a high-heat clean, or reading locked during a normal cooking cycle. One exception worth knowing: on some GE Monogram 30-inch wall ovens, GE's technical service guide uses F9 for a stalled cooling fan or open thermal switch instead, so if you have one of those, check the cooling fan and airflow to the control area. GE also lists a separate FC code for door lock circuit problems on some models.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Do a power reset: switch off the oven's circuit breaker (or unplug a freestanding range) for a minute or two, then restore power. GE says this sometimes clears a fault code.
  2. If the door is stuck locked after self-clean, GE's steps are to disconnect power for 30 seconds and reconnect it; if it still won't unlatch and the oven is empty, run a short self-clean (1 to 2 hours), let it cool about 30 minutes and try again. Never force the latch.
  3. With the oven cool and power off, look at the latch area at the top of the oven opening for debris, a bent hook or anything blocking it.
  4. If F9 keeps coming back, GE recommends leaving the breaker off until the oven is serviced. It's fine to turn the breaker on just long enough to use the cooktop, then off again.
  5. Write down your model number (on a label around the oven door frame or storage drawer) before ordering a lock assembly or booking service; lock assemblies are model-specific.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • Running the lock motor through a full lock and unlock cycle and watching or listening for sticking, grinding or a motor that doesn't move.
  • Checking the lock motor winding and the lock and unlock switches for correct continuity at each latch position with a multimeter, and checking the door switch.
  • Inspecting the harness between the control and the lock assembly for burnt, loose or pinched wires.
  • Replacing the door lock motor and switch assembly (the usual repair), and the oven control or relay board only if the lock circuit tests good. On Monogram wall ovens that use F9 for the cooling fan, checking the fan and airflow first.

Parts that commonly fix it
