Frigidaire Washer E1 Error Code: Long Fill Time, Water Not Entering (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 · Based on 3 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Frigidaire defines Error Code E1 on top-loading washers as long fill time: water is not entering the washer, or it's filling slowly. The Use & Care guide for these top loaders (A29259301) spells out the limits on its error-code chart: the fill error appears when the washer takes more than 30 minutes to fill at a low water level, 45 minutes at medium, or 60 minutes at high, or when the water level hasn't changed for five minutes while the washer is filling. That chart's solutions match Frigidaire's E1 article step for step. The same guide says water pressure must be at least 10 psi (69 kPa) and that running water elsewhere in the house while the washer fills can slow it down. It also covers a less obvious cause: if water is clearly coming in but the tub never fills, the drain standpipe may be too short, and Frigidaire says it must be at least 36 inches (90 cm) high to prevent siphoning. A leak from the tub can also keep the level from rising, which is why Frigidaire includes checking for one.

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Make sure the lid is fully closed.
  2. Turn both the hot and cold faucets fully open.
  3. Straighten any kinked inlet hoses.
  4. Open another faucet in the house to check pressure. If flow is weak everywhere, wait until supply and pressure improve, and avoid running water elsewhere while the washer fills.
  5. Clean the hose screens: turn off both faucets, disconnect the inlet hoses, rinse the filter screens clean, then reconnect the hoses and check that the rubber sealing washers are in place so they don't leak.
  6. Watch a fill. If water is clearly coming in but the level doesn't rise, check that the drain hose goes into a standpipe at least 36 inches (90 cm) high, and look under and around the washer for water leaking from the tub.
  7. Restart the cycle. If E1 shows again after these checks, schedule service.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • E1 keeps returning with the lid closed, faucets fully open, straight hoses, clean screens and good water pressure; Frigidaire recommends a service visit at that point.
  • Water is leaking from the tub itself.
  • The washer is under warranty. Frigidaire's top-load guide lists service at 1-800-944-9044.
