Maytag Washer LF Error Code: Long Fill, Taking Too Long to Fill (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Maytag says LF (long fill) means the washer is taking too long to fill, and groups it with F8 E1, which means the washer isn't detecting the correct amount of incoming water. Maytag's top-load washers sense the water supply and need water coming through both the hot and cold hoses; if the control doesn't detect both, it treats it as a water pressure sensor problem, locks the lid and runs an 8-minute pump-out. On front loaders showing F8 E1 or Lo FL, Maytag says pressing Power starts a drain routine of about 8 to 10 minutes during which the control won't accept input, so wait about 10 minutes before trying again. A common hidden cause is siphoning: if more than 4.5 inches of drain hose sits in the standpipe, the hose is taped in, or the standpipe is under 39 inches tall, water drains out while the washer fills, so it never reaches the expected level. Maytag's service manual for the MVW6200KW top loader adds that a failing pressure transducer usually shows up as a long fill or long drain code, so a clogged or pinched pressure hose is the technician-level cause once the plumbing checks out.
Likely causes
- Hot or cold faucet turned off or only partly open (Maytag top loaders need water on both hoses)
- Kinked inlet hose, or a hose clogged with mineral build-up or debris
- Hot and cold hoses swapped (red hose should go to the red/hot valve, blue to cold)
- Clogged water inlet screens on the back of the washer
- An anti-flood or flood-safe device reducing water pressure
- Drain hose pushed more than 4.5 inches (113 mm) into the standpipe, taped or sealed in, or a standpipe under 39 inches (99 cm), which makes the washer siphon while filling
- Low household water pressure
- Technician level: a pinched, leaking or clogged pressure hose or dome, or a faulty pressure transducer on the main control (per the MVW6200KW service manual)
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- If the lid or door is locked, let the pump-out or drain routine finish (about 8 to 10 minutes) before pressing anything else.
- Turn both the hot and cold faucets fully open, even if you only wash in cold.
- Check both inlet hoses for kinks. Disconnect them and run water through them at a sink; if the flow is weak or blocked, replace the hose.
- Make sure the hot (red) hose goes to the hot valve and the cold (blue) hose to the cold valve.
- With the water off and hoses removed, check the inlet screens where the hoses attach to the washer and clear any debris.
- If you have an anti-flood device on the supply line, try connecting the hose directly; Maytag recommends a direct connection.
- Check the drain hose: use the U-shaped hose form so only about 4.5 inches goes into the standpipe, don't tape it in (leave an air gap), and make sure the standpipe top is at least 39 inches off the floor.
- Straighten a kinked drain hose and clear any blockage in the standpipe or laundry tub.
- Run a short cycle and watch: if water flows in strongly but the level never rises, that points to siphoning through the drain hose.
🛠 When to call a pro
- LF keeps coming back with both faucets open, clean hoses and screens, and a correctly installed drain hose.
- Water doesn't enter the washer at all even though the supply is fine, which points to the water inlet valve or its wiring.
- The washer fills but still reports LF or a long drain code; the service manual points to the pressure hose, dome or the pressure transducer on the main control.
- The washer is under warranty. Use Maytag's contact or schedule-service page (1-800-344-1274) rather than opening the console.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Washer inlet hoses
Replace a hose that's kinked, cracked, or won't flow freely at a sink, as Maytag suggests.

Keeps only about 4.5 inches of drain hose in the standpipe so the washer doesn't siphon.
