Daikin Error Code E7: Outdoor Fan Motor Lock (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Daikin's residential manuals call E7 "DC fan lock" or "Outdoor DC fan motor lock," and its SkyAir and VRV manuals call it "Malfunction of Outdoor Unit Fan Motor" or "Outdoor Fan Motor Abnormality." The outdoor fan motor has a Hall IC that sends speed pulses back to the outdoor board. When the fan is supposed to be running but its speed stays below a set level for a short time (15 seconds on the SkyAir RZQ manuals, 6 seconds on newer VRV manuals), or the speed-signal connector is unplugged, the board flags E7. On VRV units an overcurrent on the fan circuit also counts. If it happens 4 times, the system shuts down; on the SkyAir and VRV manuals the code clears after the fan runs normally for 5 minutes. Note that the outdoor fan normally keeps running for about 60 to 70 seconds after the compressor stops and turns off during defrost, so a fan that is briefly stopped is not by itself a fault.
Likely causes
- The outdoor fan motor has failed (worn bearings, failed winding, or a bad internal Hall sensor).
- The fan motor harness or connector to the outdoor board is disconnected, loose or has poor contact.
- Something is stopping the fan from turning: ice, snow, leaves, sticks or other debris caught in the blade or guard.
- A defective outdoor unit PCB that isn't driving the fan or reading its speed pulses.
- A blown fuse on the outdoor board (listed by Daikin's SkyAir RZQS manual).
Safe DIY checks
The outdoor DC fan motor runs on about 320 VDC from the inverter board, and inverter capacitors can stay charged after the power is off. Turn off the breaker before touching the fan or any connector and let the board discharge. Leave voltage and pulse checks to a qualified technician.
- Turn the system off and switch off the breaker or disconnect for the outdoor unit. Never reach into the fan with power on.
- Look through the fan guard for ice, snow, leaves, sticks or nests, and clear anything that is touching or jamming the blade. In winter, let ice melt or use the unit's normal defrost instead of chipping at the coil.
- With the power still off, gently try turning the fan blade with a stick or gloved hand. It should spin freely; if it is stiff, grinding or won't turn, the motor likely needs replacing.
- Restore power and restart. If the fan doesn't start when the compressor runs, or E7 returns, note the code and model numbers and call a licensed HVAC technician.
๐ When to call a pro
- Checking that the fan motor connectors are seated on the outdoor PCB, as the first step in Daikin's flowchart.
- Removing any foreign matter and checking whether the fan turns smoothly by hand with the motor connector unplugged; Daikin says replace the outdoor fan motor if it does not.
- Doing Daikin's rotation pulse check: on the Entra wall-mount manual that means about 320 VDC motor supply, 15 VDC control voltage and a 0 to 6.5 VDC speed command at the fan connector, and 4 pulses per turn of the fan by hand.
- Replacing the fan motor if no speed pulses are produced (a bad Hall IC), or the outdoor PCB if the supply voltage is missing or the pulses are present but E7 continues.
- Checking the outdoor board fuse and, if it has blown, checking the fan motor before replacing the fuse.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
