Midea Mini Split Error Code F5: Outdoor Fan Speed Out of Normal Range (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-24 ยท Based on 2 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Midea's Oasis Plus 3D Inverter service manual lists F5 as "The outdoor fan speed is operating outside of the normal range" and explains: "When the outdoor fan speed registers below 200RPM or over 1500RPM for an extended period of time, the unit will stop and the LED will display the failure (F5)." Midea's wall-mount inverter service manual words it as "Outdoor fan speed has been out of control" and shows it on units without a code display as the operation lamp flashing 6 times with the timer lamp on. F5 is the outdoor twin of E3, which is the same check on the indoor fan, and Midea uses one troubleshooting procedure for both. The outdoor fan has to run so the condenser coil can shed heat (or pick it up in heating), so the unit shuts down rather than keep running with a fan it can't control.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

The outdoor fan can start on its own whenever the unit has power, so always switch off the breaker or outdoor disconnect before going near the blade. Inverter outdoor units hold a dangerous charge in their capacitors even after power is removed, which is why voltage and resistance tests belong to a licensed HVAC technician. Many newer Midea units use R32 refrigerant, which is mildly flammable.

  1. Do Midea's first step: turn the system off, wait 2 minutes, then restart it. If F5 doesn't come back, Midea says the unit is operating normally.
  2. Turn off the breaker or outdoor disconnect, then look through the outdoor unit's fan grille. Clear leaves, sticks, snow or ice around and on top of the unit without reaching into the fan.
  3. With the power still off, Midea's next step is to check whether the fan turns easily by hand. If you can do it safely through the grille with a stick or gloved finger, give the blade a gentle push. A blade that rubs, binds or won't move points to an obstruction, a bent blade or a seized motor.
  4. In winter, if the fan is iced in, let the unit thaw (or let it complete a defrost) instead of chipping at the ice, which can bend the blade or puncture the coil.
  5. Don't open the outdoor unit's electrical cover. Inverter outdoor units store a dangerous charge even after the power is off.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • F5 comes back after the restart and the fan turns freely. A technician checks the fan motor's wiring and connector at the outdoor board, which is Midea's next step.
  • The wiring is good. On outdoor DC fan motors with the control chip on the outdoor board, Midea says that if the fan runs normally the board is at fault; if it doesn't, the technician measures resistance between each pair of motor pins. Unequal readings mean the motor needs replacing; equal readings point back to the board.
  • On DC fan motors with the control chip inside the motor, Midea's test is to measure the connector voltages at standby (about 280 to 380 V on the red wire, 14 to 18.5 V on the white Vcc wire, referenced to black ground). Out-of-range voltages mean the board must be replaced; in-range voltages mean the motor is replaced.
  • The fan blade is cracked, loose on the shaft or the motor bearing is seized. The blade or motor is replaced.
