Electrolux Dryer E61 Error Code: Heater Relay Failure (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Electrolux's Dryer Tech Data Sheets for its electronic-control dryers (for example the EIMED60J sheet, part 137265000B, and the EIMED55 sheet) list E61 as "Heater Relay failure," with the possible fault conditions "Heater relay stuck open or closed" and "Wiring defective." The heater relays (RL5, RL6 and RL7 on the sheet) sit on the electronic control board and switch line voltage to the heating element. A relay stuck open means the element never gets power, so the drum tumbles but the load stays cold. A relay stuck closed is the more serious case, because the heater can stay powered when the cycle is stopped. That's why the sheet's first check is for a short across the relays or L1 present at the relay outputs with the cycle stopped, followed by a check for an open circuit between L1 and the relay inputs. If no wiring problem is found, the sheet says to replace the electronic control board and retest. E61 is a board-side fault, unlike E64 (the heating element or its wiring open), E63 (heater shorted to the cabinet) and E65 (too many high-limit trips, usually from a blocked vent). Frigidaire dryers built on the same Electrolux platform use the identical E61 definition. The relay checks describe an electric heater, so E61 applies to electric models.
Likely causes
- A heater relay on the electronic control board with welded contacts, stuck closed (one of the two conditions Electrolux's tech sheet names)
- A heater relay stuck open, so the heating element never gets power
- A loose, burned or damaged wire or connector between L1, the relays and the heater
- A failed electronic control board, which is Electrolux's fix once the wiring checks out
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- If the dryer keeps heating with the cycle stopped or the door open, or you smell burning, unplug it or switch off both dryer breakers now and leave it off until it's repaired.
- Otherwise, turn off the dryer's double breaker for a few minutes, turn it back on, and run a short timed-dry cycle to see whether E61 comes back.
- Make sure neither leg of the 240 V breaker has tripped. Electrolux's no-heat support article notes an electric dryer uses two house circuits, and losing one lets the drum turn with no heat.
- To confirm the stored code, Electrolux's tech sheet says to wake the dryer by pressing any button except Cancel, then hold Cancel and Start/Pause together for 6 seconds. The last code shows as E plus two digits, and E00 means no fault is stored.
- With the dryer unplugged, you can look over the harness at the control board and the heater terminals for loose, scorched or melted connectors. Every other check on Electrolux's E61 procedure is a live-voltage test on the board, so stop there if you aren't trained for it.
๐ When to call a pro
- E61 comes back after a power reset. A technician follows Electrolux's sheet: check for a short across the heater relays or L1 at the relay outputs with the cycle stopped, then for an open circuit between L1 and the relay inputs.
- The wiring checks out, so the electronic control board needs replacing, which is Electrolux's stated fix.
- The dryer heats with the cycle stopped. Keep it unplugged until repaired, since a stuck-closed relay can keep the heater powered.
- The dryer is under warranty; use an Electrolux authorized service provider.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Dryer electronic control board
Electrolux's fix for E61 once the wiring is ruled out, because the heater relays are on the board. Match it to your full model number from the label inside the door opening.
