Electrolux Washer E21 Error Code: Water Not Draining Fast Enough (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-23 ยท Based on 4 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Electrolux's North American support article defines E21 as "long pump out time": the washer's water isn't pumping fast enough or is taking too long to empty. Electrolux service manuals describe it the same way for technicians: "Difficulty in draining, maximum drain time exceeded," measured for each phase of the cycle. The service manual says the cycle pauses until it's reset with START/RESET. Electrolux's UK and Australian support pages group E21 with E20 and other drain codes. Signs include water left in the drum, a spin that won't start or finish, unusual noise from the drain pump area, and clothes that are wetter than normal. On washer-dryers, Electrolux uses E22 for the same kind of drain trouble during drying.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Check behind the washer for kinks or twists in the drain hose and straighten them.
  2. Check the hose position. Electrolux says it should go no more than 10 cm (about 4 inches) down into the drain, and the drain height should be between 60 and 100 cm (about 24 to 39 inches) above the base of the machine, or as your manual shows.
  3. Unplug the washer, open the drain pump door at the bottom front, and drain the leftover water into a shallow container. Then unscrew the filter, clear lint and objects, make sure the pump impeller turns (Electrolux suggests a pencil), rinse the filter and screw it back in tightly.
  4. Run a hot wash with no detergent to flush the drain system.
  5. Test the house drain: run a cycle with the drain hose in a bowl or sink. If it works that way, the sink trap or standpipe is clogged.
  6. If the hose was extended, check the joint, which clogs more easily because it's narrower.
  7. If there's a lot of foam, remove it from the drum, clean the pump filter, run a hot wash with no detergent, and use less detergent next time.
  8. Electrolux UK says switching off power for about 1 to 2 hours can help, since a blocked pump may have been shut off by its thermal fuse until it cools.
  9. Electrolux's North American article also says to make sure the hot and cold supply hoses aren't reversed after a new install or move, and to contact your installer if the washer was installed within the past 30 days.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • E21 comes back after you've cleaned the filter and confirmed the hose and house drain are clear.
  • The pump doesn't run or hum during draining, or the impeller is broken. Electrolux's service manuals call for checking pump resistance and wiring, and replacing the pump if it fails.
  • The pressure switch or its small air hose may be clogged or faulty. Electrolux's service manuals list both as E21 causes.
  • The control board may be at fault after the pump and pressure switch check out, or you see burn marks on it.
  • Your washer was installed in the last 30 days. Electrolux says to go back to the installer first.
