LG Washer Error Code OE: Washer Won't Drain (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
LG says the OE code appears when the washer is unable to drain the water used during the cycle. On LG top loaders, the code shows after the washer has been unable to drain for 13 minutes. On LG's newer front-load error code list the same drain problem is grouped as OE/E03/E21. LG names four usual causes: a clogged drain pump filter, a kinked, pinched or frozen drain hose (or one installed too high), a clogged household drain or standpipe, and excess suds, which create air pockets so the pump sucks air instead of water and reports a drain problem. If the drain pump doesn't hum during a Spin Only test, LG says the washer needs repair service.
Likely causes
- Drain pump filter clogged with lint, coins, buttons or other debris (front loaders and washer-dryer combos; LG top loaders don't have this filter)
- Drain hose kinked or pinched, often because the washer is pushed too close to the wall (LG asks for at least 4 inches behind it)
- Drain hose installed too high. LG says it should be no higher than about 20 inches (50 cm) from the floor on front loaders
- Drain hose or drain pump frozen in a cold garage or laundry room
- Clogged standpipe or floor drain in the house, so the problem is the plumbing, not the washer
- Too much detergent or the wrong detergent, causing excess suds that the pump can't move
- Drain pump jammed by a sock, string or other item wrapped around the impeller
- Failed drain pump, a loose pump connector, or (less often) a main control board fault
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Unplug the washer before working on it. Remaining water can be hot, so let it cool and have a shallow pan and towels ready.
- Pull the washer out and check the drain hose behind it. Straighten any kinks or pinched spots and clear any clog. Leave at least 4 inches between the washer and the wall.
- Front loaders: open the small service cover at the bottom front. Unclip the small residual-water drain tube, pull its cap and let the water drain into the pan. Then twist the drain pump filter counter-clockwise, remove it, and clean it and its opening with a soft brush and warm water. Reinstall it firmly clockwise and re-cap the drain tube.
- Test the pump with a Spin Only cycle (on many front loaders, set Spin Speed to High and press Start; on many top loaders, use Special Use until Spin Only lights). Listen for a hum and draining water in the first 15 seconds.
- Rule out your house drain: take the drain hose out of the standpipe, hold it into a bucket or tub, and run a spin. If the washer drains fine this way, the clog is in your home's drain, not the washer.
- If the hose or pump may be frozen, LG suggests pouring warm water (122 to 140°F / 50 to 60°C) into the drum, closing the door and waiting 1 to 2 hours before draining.
- If the filter and hose were clear, run a Tub Clean cycle and cut back on detergent. Use HE detergent and only the recommended amount, since excess suds can trigger OE.
- Top loaders can be force-drained: LG says starting a cycle and pausing it makes the washer time out after about 8 minutes, show DR, and try to drain.
🛠 When to call a pro
- The pump doesn't hum or make any noise during the Spin Only test. LG says the washer needs repair at that point.
- OE keeps coming back after you cleaned the filter, cleared the hose, confirmed the house drain is fine and ran a Tub Clean.
- You suspect a jammed or failed drain pump on a top loader. Reaching it usually means removing panels and disconnecting hoses and wiring.
- Electrical checks of the pump, connector or control board. LG's service manual for one top-load series lists pump coil resistance and voltage tests that belong with a technician.
- The washer is under warranty. Schedule LG service instead of taking it apart.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Drain pump assembly
The usual fix when the pump doesn't run or is damaged. Part numbers vary by model, so match it to your washer's model number before ordering.
