What the code means

Sears PartsDirect, Kenmore's longtime parts and repair arm, says F21 on the Kenmore HE2 and HE2 Plus means "the washer failed to drain within 8 minutes." The Kenmore Elite HE3 Use and Care Guide lists F21 as a "Drain Problem." These are Whirlpool-built washers (the HE3 guide covers 110-series models), and Whirlpool describes the same F21 code as a drain time that is longer than expected. LG-built Kenmore 796-series washers show OE for a drain problem instead, so check the model number on the label before following this page.

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Press STOP twice to cancel the cycle, then unplug the washer or turn off its breaker. That is the first step in the Kenmore HE3 guide.
  2. Pull the washer out a little and straighten the drain hose so there are no kinks.
  3. Check the drain hose, standpipe and any utility sink for a clog, and clear it.
  4. If the washer is in a cold space, check whether the drain hose froze, and let it thaw before running another cycle.
  5. Make sure the end of the drain hose is no more than 96 inches (2.4 m) above the floor.
  6. Use only HE detergent in the recommended amount. Whirlpool, which built these washers, says too much or non-HE detergent makes suds that can cause draining problems.
  7. Plug the washer back in, choose the cycle again and press START. If F21 comes back, Kenmore says to call for service.

  • The hose and drain are clear and F21 keeps coming back. Sears PartsDirect says to clear the large item filter in the drain pump, and these HE2 models have no front access door for it, so it means working inside the cabinet with a tub that may still hold water.
  • The filter is clear and the drain pump doesn't move water when it runs. Sears PartsDirect says to replace the drain pump.
  • The washer shows F33 instead of F21. Sears PartsDirect lists that as a drain pump relay failure on the main control board, which is a board replacement.
  • The washer is still under warranty. Kenmore's Customer Care line is 1-844-553-6667.
