Frigidaire Dryer E65: High Limit Thermostat Trip Count Too High (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Frigidaire's Dryer Tech Data Sheet (part 137032900) lists E65 as "High Limit Thermostat trip count too high." The possible fault conditions it gives are high vent restriction, a defective high limit thermostat, or a tripped inlet thermal limiter on electric models. The high limit thermostat is a safety switch that opens when the dryer gets too hot, so the control logs E65 once it has counted too many of those trips. The sheet's fix order is: on electric models check the inlet thermal limiter for continuity; if it's open, look for signs of a high-temperature event and damage, and replace the limiter if there's no other damage; if the limiter is fine, check the exhaust vent system for blockages; if the vent is clear, check or replace the high limit thermostat and retest. The same sheet lists the neighboring codes separately: E64 is an open heater circuit, E66 is an open thermal limiter, and EF1 and EF3 are vent-blocked and max-time faults. You can show the last stored code by waking the dryer and holding Cancel and Start/Pause together for 6 seconds.
Likely causes
- A restricted exhaust vent, which Frigidaire's tech data sheet lists first: lint in the duct, a crushed or kinked duct, or a blocked outdoor vent hood
- A clogged lint screen, or residue on it from dryer sheets that blocks airflow
- Plastic or foil ducting, or a duct run that's too long or has too many turns for Frigidaire's venting chart
- A dryer installed in a closet or under a counter without enough ventilation, which Frigidaire names as a cause of poor drying
- A tripped (open) inlet thermal limiter on electric models
- A defective high limit thermostat
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the dryer before cleaning the duct or opening the cabinet, and turn off the gas supply on a gas model. Don't keep running the dryer while E65 keeps coming back, since repeated high-limit trips mean it's overheating and a lint-clogged vent is a fire hazard. Never vent a dryer indoors; Frigidaire warns a gas dryer must always vent outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide.
- Read the stored code: wake the dryer with any button except Cancel, then hold Cancel and Start/Pause together for 6 seconds, as Frigidaire's tech data sheet describes. E00 means no fault is stored.
- Clean the lint screen. Frigidaire says to clean it after every load and to wash it in warm, soapy water now and then to remove residue, drying it fully before putting it back.
- Unplug the dryer (and shut off the gas on a gas model), pull it out and disconnect the duct. Clean lint out of the dryer's exhaust outlet and the full duct run with a vent brush, all the way to the outside.
- Go outside and make sure the vent hood flap swings open when the dryer runs and closes when it stops. Remove any screen over the hood and clear lint, nests or snow. Frigidaire wants at least 12 inches between the bottom of the hood and the ground.
- Check the duct itself. Frigidaire's installation instructions call for 4-inch rigid or semi-rigid metal duct only, no plastic or foil, no screws through the duct, and no more than 8 feet total if you use semi-rigid duct. Straighten any crushed or kinked sections.
- Compare your run to Frigidaire's venting chart. With a 4-inch hood, rigid metal duct can run 115 feet with no 90-degree turns, dropping to 75 feet with four turns; a 2.5-inch louvered hood allows 10 feet less.
- Reconnect everything and run a timed-dry cycle with a normal load. If the exhaust at the outdoor hood feels strong and E65 doesn't return, the vent was the problem. Frigidaire recommends inspecting and cleaning the whole exhaust system at least every 18 months.
๐ When to call a pro
- E65 comes back after the lint screen, duct and outdoor hood are all clean and the duct meets Frigidaire's requirements.
- On an electric model, the inlet thermal limiter tests open. Frigidaire's tech sheet says to check for signs of a high-temperature event and any damage before replacing it.
- You see scorch marks, melted parts or burnt lint near the heater, which means the dryer overheated and needs a full inspection.
- The high limit thermostat needs testing or replacement, which means working inside the cabinet near the heater and wiring.
- The duct runs through a wall or attic you can't reach, or the run is longer than Frigidaire's chart allows and needs to be rerouted.
