LG Dryer Error Code D80: Vent About 80% Blocked (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
LG's Flow Sense system watches how well hot, humid air leaves the dryer. LG says d75, d80, d90 and d95 mean the exhaust duct is clogged about 75%, 80%, 90% or 95%, and two or four lit bars on the Flow Sense indicator mean the exhaust is severely restricted. LG's owner's manual says the warning itself is not a dryer failure and isn't covered by warranty. The dryer can still run with a d80, but drying takes longer and uses more energy, and a badly restricted vent is a fire risk, so LG says to check and clean the ductwork right away. The code shows for about 2 hours after a cycle; opening the door or pressing Power clears the display. On LG gas dryers, LG notes a d80 can also mean the dryer isn't getting enough gas.
Likely causes
- Lint built up in the lint filter, the filter housing, or the vent duct
- Exhaust hose behind the dryer crushed, dented or kinked, often from pushing the dryer too close to the wall
- Flexible foil hose coiled or sagging, or loose and leaking at a connection
- Outside vent hood flaps stuck shut with lint, or blocked by a screen, nest or debris
- A duct run that's too long or has too many 90-degree elbows for the dryer to push air through
- An overstuffed load that blocks air moving from the back of the drum to the front
- On gas models, a closed or low gas supply
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Clean the lint filter before every load. If it looks clogged, LG says to wash it with warm water and a soft brush and let it dry fully before putting it back.
- Use smaller loads so air can pass through the drum.
- Unplug the dryer, pull it out, and disconnect the exhaust hose. Check that it isn't crushed, kinked, torn, or coiled like a spring, and that every joint is tight.
- Brush or vacuum lint out of the hose, the dryer's exhaust outlet, and the wall duct. For long runs, use a drill-powered dryer vent brush.
- Go outside and find the vent hood. Clear lint, nests or debris, and make sure the flaps open fully. Run an Air Dry cycle and check for strong airflow at the outside vent.
- If you use foil or vinyl hose, switch to rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, and keep the run as short and straight as you can. Your installation manual lists the maximum length for your model and number of elbows.
- Reconnect everything and run a few normal cycles. LG says Flow Sense needs several consecutive cycles to see the improvement before the warning resets.
- On a gas dryer, make sure the gas shutoff valve behind the dryer is fully open.
๐ When to call a pro
- The warning is still on more than five cycles after you've cleared the restriction. LG says to call for service at that point.
- The vent runs through walls, an attic or a roof and you can't reach or clean the whole thing. LG recommends a professional dryer vent cleaning service, and suggests asking them for the duct length and number of 90-degree bends.
- The duct run is too long or has too many turns and needs to be rerouted.
- You suspect a gas supply problem on a gas dryer. Gas work should be done by a qualified technician.
- The dryer shows d90 or d95. LG says not to use the dryer until the exhaust system is cleaned or repaired.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Dryer vent cleaning brush kit
Flexible rods with a brush that attach to a drill, for cleaning long duct runs from inside or outside.
[affiliate link slot: AFFILIATE_SLOT_VENT_BRUSH]4-inch rigid or semi-rigid metal dryer duct
Replaces crushed foil or vinyl hose. Metal duct holds its shape and traps less lint.
[affiliate link slot: AFFILIATE_SLOT_DRYER_DUCT]Exterior dryer vent hood
Replace one with broken or sticking flaps. Avoid screened hoods, which catch lint.

Only if yours is torn or warped. Match the part number to your dryer's model number.
