Kenmore Dryer d80 Error Code: Exhaust Vent About 80% Blocked (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

Kenmore's Use & Care Guide for its 796.8139 dryers lists d80, d90 and d95 together under the CHECK VENT warning: the ductwork is about 80% to 95% blocked, and the code only stays on the display for 2 hours. The guide gives several possible causes for that row, each with its own advice: a vent run that's too long or has too many turns (install a shorter or straighter run), partial blockage from lint or other objects (the duct should be checked and cleaned immediately; the dryer can still run, but drying takes longer and uses more energy), and a blocked house exhaust system (don't use the dryer until the exhaust has been cleaned or repaired, because using it with a severely restricted exhaust can cause a fire or other property damage). It also says this warning is not a dryer failure and isn't covered by the warranty. The Sears full service manual for Kenmore 796.6155#.610 and 796.7155#.610 dryers, as quoted by MyPros+, describes d80 the same way and starts diagnosis by checking the outside vent while the dryer runs and checking the exhaust system for restrictions and damage. d80 appears on Kenmore dryers built by LG, whose model numbers start with 796 (per the PartSelect prefix chart), and LG lists d75, d80, d90 and d95 as about 75%, 80%, 90% and 95% exhaust restriction. So d80 is an early warning: d90 and d95 are the more severe levels. LG also notes that on gas dryers a d80 can point to a lack of gas reaching the dryer. Kenmore dryers made by Whirlpool (model numbers starting with 110) or Frigidaire (417) don't use this code.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Clean the lint screen and vacuum lint out of the screen opening.
  2. Run the dryer and go outside to feel the vent hood. Kenmore's guide says the airflow should be strong. Weak or no airflow means the restriction is in the duct or the hood.
  3. Clear the outside vent hood and the area around it, and make sure the flap opens freely and isn't packed with lint, nest material or damage.
  4. Unplug the dryer (and on a gas model, turn off the dryer's gas valve before moving it), pull it out carefully, and disconnect the duct from the back. Check the hose and wall duct for lint, kinks and crushed sections, as LG's d80 steps describe.
  5. Brush or vacuum lint out of the hose and wall duct. For a long run, a drill-powered vent brush reaches deeper.
  6. Replace any crushed, plastic or foil transition duct with 4-inch rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, and push the dryer back without flattening it.
  7. On a gas dryer, confirm the house gas shutoff and the dryer's gas shutoff valve are both fully open.
  8. Run a load. LG says the code clears on its own once airflow is restored, though the sensor can take several cycles; LG's manual says to call for service if the warning is still active after five cycles once the restriction is cleared.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • You can't reach or clear the whole vent run, such as a long run through a wall, attic or roof. Kenmore and LG both point you to a duct cleaning service.
  • The run is too long or has too many elbows and needs rerouting.
  • The code climbs to d90 or d95, or keeps coming back after the lint screen, duct and vent hood are clean and airflow outside is strong.
  • Anything involving the gas line or a suspected gas supply problem on a gas dryer.
  • You see scorched lint, smell burning or find a melted duct. Stop using the dryer.
