LG Dryer Error Code D90: Vent About 90% Blocked (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 ยท Based on 4 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

LG's Flow Sense system checks how well hot, humid air leaves the dryer. LG USA says d75, d80, d90 and d95 mean the exhaust duct is about 75%, 80%, 90% or 95% clogged, and that two or four lit bars on the Flow Sense indicator mean the exhaust is severely restricted. LG Canada calls these codes safety alerts rather than dryer malfunctions: poor venting makes the dryer run hot, and LG warns that reduced airflow is a fire risk if ignored. LG's owner's manual says not to use the dryer while it shows d90 or d95 until the exhaust system is cleaned or repaired. Signs that usually come with it are long drying times, clothes needing more than one cycle, and the dryer feeling hotter than normal; a burning smell means stop right away.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Stop drying loads until the vent is cleared. Unplug the dryer, and on a gas dryer shut off the gas valve before pulling it out.
  2. Clean the lint filter. If it's coated, wash it with warm water and a soft brush and let it dry fully before reinstalling it.
  3. Disconnect the exhaust hose and check that it isn't crushed, kinked, torn or coiled. A gentle S-curve is fine.
  4. Brush or vacuum lint out of the hose, the dryer's exhaust outlet, and as much of the wall duct as you can reach. A drill-powered dryer vent brush helps on longer runs.
  5. Go outside to the vent hood. Clear lint, nests and debris, and make sure the flaps can open all the way.
  6. Replace foil or plastic hose with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, and keep the run short and straight. Your owner's manual lists the maximum duct length for your model and number of elbows.
  7. Reconnect everything, run a timed or Air Dry cycle with the drum empty, and feel for strong airflow at the outside vent.
  8. Run a few normal cycles. Flow Sense needs several consecutive cycles to register the better airflow before the warning goes away.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • The vent runs inside walls, an attic or a roof and you can't clean all of it. LG recommends a dryer vent cleaning specialist and suggests asking them for the total duct length and number of 90-degree bends.
  • The duct is too long or has too many turns and needs rerouting.
  • The warning keeps coming back after the vent has been cleaned or replaced. LG Canada says the blower fan may be defective and to contact LG service.
  • You smell burning or the dryer is very hot to the touch. Stop using it until it has been inspected.
  • You have a gas dryer and suspect a gas supply problem. Gas work should be done by a qualified technician.
