GE Washer Error Code 38: Vent Damper Fault on UltraFresh Front Loaders (E38 Dispenser Error on Older Models)

What the code means

GE's Technical Service Guide 31-9327 for UltraFresh front-load washers lists codes 38, 39, 40 and 84 under Vent Damper, with the trigger condition that the close or open feedback fails after 5 seconds. The vent damper is a motorized flap at the front of the washer, screwed to the front panel and clamped to the door gasket. It lets fresh air into the tub and basket to fight odors, keeps them dry between loads, and lets air circulate during the 1-Step Wash + Dry feature, so it works alongside the UltraFresh Vent with OdorBlock system. These washers usually keep running normally with this fault; one owner on the AppliancePartsPros forum found code 38 in the fault history while the washer otherwise worked. On these models stored codes are read through Consumer Fault Code Mode: from idle with all lights off, hold Start for 10 seconds until all LEDs light, then press Start to step through the codes; a blinking dash means no more faults. The older GE front-load service guide 31-9261 (December 2016, models GFWS1700/1705, GFWN1100/1300/1600, GFWH1200, GFW400 and GFW450) uses E38 for a Dispenser error: the motor-driven dispenser cam ran but the control didn't find the correct reservoir position. On those models E39 is the related dispenser timeout.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Find your model number on the label inside the door opening. If it starts with GFW510, GFW550, GFW650, GFW655, GFW850, PFW870, PFW950 or PFW955, code 38 is the vent damper. If it's a GFWN, GFWS, GFWH or GFW400/450, E38 is the dispenser error.
  2. Reset the washer: unplug it or switch off its breaker for about a minute, then restore power (the general reset Appliance Fault Codes recommends). An intermittent glitch may not return.
  3. On UltraFresh models, open the door and look up through the grill at the top of the door opening, where the damper sits. Make sure nothing is jammed in the vent and gently feel that the damper door isn't loose or broken in its housing, as GE's guide suggests.
  4. If the washer otherwise washes and spins normally, you can keep using it and leave the door open between loads to help it dry out while you arrange a repair. The damper's job is airflow and odor control.
  5. On older models with E38, make sure the dispenser drawer is fully closed and seated, and that nothing like a spilled detergent pod or hardened residue is blocking it. Then run a cycle and see if the code comes back.
  6. If the code returns after a reset, book a repair or move on to the technician checks below. Testing the damper needs the washer's service mode and a meter.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • Code 38 keeps coming back on an UltraFresh washer. GE's service guide has a technician run Service Mode test 24 (Damper): pressing Start toggles the damper, and the Soil Level Light LED blinks when the damper reports open and Extra Light blinks when it reports closed. If the indicator doesn't toggle, the damper isn't giving feedback.
  • Winding checks: GE's Rev. 1 guide measures the opening winding at J501 pins 1 to 2 and the closing winding at pins 2 to 3 on the main board, both about 4.2 kilohms; the later revision lists the vent damper motor at 4.3 kilohms. Out-of-range readings or no feedback mean replacing the damper.
  • Replacing the damper means removing the control panel and three screws at the top center of the front panel, then disconnecting its harness and gasket clamp. GE's guide notes the harness connector is hard to reach and the wire tie must be reinstalled.
  • E38 on an older GFWN, GFWS, GFWH or GFW400/450 washer. GE's 2016 guide has technicians check the dispenser with service test t12 and warns not to unplug the dispenser motor connectors unless replacing it.
  • The washer is under warranty. GE's guide points owners to the warranty page in the Use and Care Manual at geappliances.com; book service through GE Appliances.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

GE washer vent damper (exact part for your model number)

For UltraFresh models, only after service test 24 shows no open or closed feedback or the winding readings are out of range. Look it up by your full model number.

⚙

GE front-load washer dispenser motor or dispenser assembly (exact part for your model number)

Only for older models where E38 is the dispenser error and service test t12 confirms the dispenser isn't working.

⚙

Washing machine cleaner tablets

Helpful for keeping odors down while the damper is out of action, since the vent damper is part of the washer's odor-control system.
