Kenmore Washer dE1 Error Code: Door Open or Not Locking (dE, dE1, dE2)

Reviewed 2026-10-23 ยท Based on 3 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Sears PartsDirect, Kenmore's longtime parts and repair arm, lists dE1 or dE2 as "door is open" on Kenmore 796-model Wi-Fi enabled front-load washers, and plain dE as "door is open error" on other Kenmore 796 front-loaders. These washers are built by LG, and LG's own support page uses the same codes: dE1 means the door is not closed properly, often because laundry is caught between the door and the rubber gasket, while dE2 means the door is closed but couldn't lock. A front-load washer has to confirm the door is shut and locked through its door lock/switch assembly before it will fill or spin. Whirlpool-built Kenmore 110-series washers use different door codes (the F5 family), so check that your model number starts with 796 first.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Open the door and push any clothes back from the opening and away from the rubber gasket. Take a few items out if the drum is packed.
  2. Close the door by pressing near the handle until it clicks, then start the cycle again.
  3. If the code stays, unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker). With the power off, press and hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, then plug it back in and try again. That is LG's reset step for dE1 on the washers Kenmore 796 models are based on.
  4. With the washer unplugged, look at the latch hook on the door and the lock opening on the washer. Remove anything stuck in the slot and look for cracked or bent plastic.
  5. Close the door gently and see whether it sits crooked or loose. A sagging door can keep the latch from reaching the lock.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • The door closes properly and dE1 keeps coming back. Sears PartsDirect says to check the door lock/switch assembly wiring next and, if the wiring is fine, you'll likely need to replace the door lock/switch assembly. That means removing panels with the washer unplugged.
  • The door, hinge or latch hook is visibly damaged. Sears PartsDirect lists door components as a possible part.
  • The door is locked shut with water or laundry inside and won't release.
  • The washer is still under warranty. Kenmore's Customer Care line is 1-844-553-6667.
