Hotpoint Dishwasher "H" on the Display: No Water Coming In (Tap Shut-Off Alarm)

What the code means

Hotpoint's quick guide for its current dishwashers (for example the H2IHD526BUK) lists "The dishwasher does not fill the water. Display shows: H, 6 and On/Off LED is blinking rapidly", with the causes no water in the water supply or the tap is closed, the inlet hose is bent, or the sieve in the water inlet hose is clogged. In practice H is the early warning: the board has opened the fill valve but isn't counting any water going in, so it beeps and shows H for a few minutes while it keeps trying. If nothing changes, it gives up and the display moves to 6, which is the same fault Hotpoint UK lists as F06, water fill timeout (on LED-only models, LED 7 and 8 on), with the advice to check the water supply is present and at sufficient pressure, the tap is fully on and the fill hose is not restricted. Hotpoint UK's fault explanation for the fill timeout adds a low water pressure or a flow meter that doesn't work, and a faulty or disconnected water solenoid valve. An Indesit/Hotpoint dishwasher service manual describes the same sequence from the engineer's side: during the static fill the main module gets no signal from the litre-count turbine, so after a short time the machine beeps and shows H, and after a further period it times out with fault 06. Older Hotpoint models such as the FDW80 show "H20" for the same tap-off condition and switch to AL06 if nobody responds. Don't confuse H with F07 (water turbine damaged), where water actually got in but the turbine never reported it, or with 15 / F15, a separate code covered on its own page.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Check the tap that feeds the dishwasher (usually under the sink) is turned fully on, and that other taps in the house have normal flow.
  2. Pull the machine out a little if needed and make sure the inlet hose isn't bent, kinked or trapped behind the dishwasher.
  3. Turn the tap off, unscrew the inlet hose from the tap and clean the small sieve (filter) in the hose end under running water, then refit it hand-tight and turn the tap back on.
  4. Switch the dishwasher off with the On/Off button, wait a few seconds, switch it back on and restart the program, as Hotpoint advises. If the machine locked out because nobody answered the beeps, this off-and-on step is what clears it.
  5. If H comes back with the tap fully on and a clean, straight hose, stop there and book an engineer: the inlet valve or the flow meter (turbine) needs testing, and both sit behind the side panel next to mains wiring.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • H or 6 / F06 keeps returning even though the tap is fully on and the hose sieve is clean: the inlet valve or flow meter needs testing. Call Hotpoint on 0344 822 4224 or book a qualified engineer.
  • The machine fills (you can hear water) but still beeps and shows H, or it overfills: that points to the flow meter (turbine) not counting water, which an engineer can confirm.
  • Water pressure in the whole house is low: a plumber should check the supply before the dishwasher is blamed.
  • The machine is under warranty: use Hotpoint's own service so the repair stays covered.

Parts that commonly fix it

Dishwasher water inlet valve

Hotpoint UK lists a faulty or disconnected water solenoid valve for the fill timeout. Have it tested before buying and order by the model and service number on the door edge.

Dishwasher inlet hose

Replace a kinked, crushed or split hose; the sieve in the hose end must be clear.
