Indesit Dishwasher Error Code 12 (F12): Main Board and Display Communication Error

Reviewed 2026-10-26 ยท Based on 2 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Indesit Service UK's dishwasher error code list names F12 "Main board & Display communication error" and gives the flashing-LED pattern as LED 6 off, LED 7 off, LED 8 on and LED 9 on, with the action to call customer service and book an engineer. On these dishwashers the main board (down in the base, running the pumps, heater and valves) and the display or user-interface board (in the door, where the buttons are) are separate boards linked by a wiring harness. F12 means the main board isn't getting a valid signal back from the display board. ReadyToDIY's Indesit dishwasher guide describes F12 as a communication error with the main circuit board that is commonly seen when the wiring is damaged in the door hinge area, where the harness flexes every time the door opens. Don't confuse F12 with nearby LED patterns: Indesit lists F13 (main board fault) as LED 6, 8 and 9 on, F15 (virtual sensor error) as all four on, and F09 (software error) as LED 6 and 9 on. Count the lights carefully before deciding which code you have.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Switch the dishwasher off and unplug it or turn it off at the isolator switch for at least 2 minutes, then switch back on and try a short program. A one-off communication glitch can clear this way (general advice; Indesit gives the same 2-minute reset for its washing machine board codes).
  2. Open and close the door slowly a few times and note whether the lights flicker or the code changes as the door moves. That points to the harness at the hinge, which is useful to tell the engineer.
  3. Check the panel lights: Indesit's F12 pattern is LED 8 and LED 9 on, with LED 6 and LED 7 off. If LED 6 is also lit it's F13, and if all four are lit it's F15, so look those up instead.
  4. Check for signs of water around the door or under the machine. Moisture reaching the connectors can cause communication faults, so fix any leak first (see the F01 anti-flood code if it trips).
  5. If F12 comes back after a reset, stop there. Indesit's advice is to book an engineer through Indesit Service UK on 0344 822 4224 or use a qualified appliance engineer. Testing the harness means removing the door panels with the power off.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • F12 returns after a full power reset: an engineer checks the harness and connectors between the door and the base before replacing either board.
  • The wiring at the door hinge is visibly cut, chafed or burnt: the harness needs replacing, which means removing door and kick panels.
  • Both boards test fine with good wiring: one of the boards needs replacing, and replacement boards on these models may need configuring for your exact model, so order by the model and service number on the label on the edge of the door.
  • The machine is under warranty: use Indesit's own service so the repair stays covered.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.
