Kenmore Dryer F4 E1 (F4E1) Error Code: Heater Relay or Heater Connection Problem (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

F4 E1 is a code from Kenmore's Whirlpool-built dryers (model numbers beginning with 110, such as the Kenmore 110 VMAX series). Sears PartsDirect lists F4 E1 or F4 E2 on those dryers as a heater relay failure. Whirlpool's service tech sheets for the same platform call F4E1 a Heater Relay or Connector Problem (or Heater 1 Failure or Connector Problem on newer sheets): the control detects no voltage at the heater relay. Whirlpool's Product Help page for dryers sums it up as a heater system problem, a possible fault in the heater or the heater relays. Some Whirlpool tech sheets note that F4E1 appears only when the dryer is in its service diagnostic test mode, so you may see it while running diagnostics rather than during a normal cycle. Don't confuse it with F4 E3 (restricted airflow: lint screen, vent hose or duct) or F4 E4 (the L2 leg of the 240-volt supply is missing, usually a tripped breaker or blown fuse). Kenmore dryers made by other companies (796 for LG, 417 for Frigidaire) use different code lists, so check the first three digits of your model number.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Turn the dryer's circuit breaker(s) off for one minute, then back on. This is Whirlpool's first step for F4 E1.
  2. Start a Timed Dry cycle and watch the dryer for about a minute. If the code doesn't come back, keep an eye on whether the dryer heats normally.
  3. If F4 E1 returns, unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before opening any panels.
  4. Check that the wires are firmly plugged into the heating element terminals and into the heater relay connections on the electronic control board. Reconnect anything loose.
  5. Look along the wire harness for burned, melted or broken wires. Sears PartsDirect says to replace the harness if it's damaged.
  6. Restore power and run a Timed Dry cycle again. If the wiring is good and F4 E1 keeps coming back, Sears PartsDirect says the electronic control board is the part to replace.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • You aren't comfortable working inside a 240-volt dryer.
  • The wiring looks fine and F4 E1 keeps coming back, so the control board needs replacing.
  • You see scorched terminals or melted insulation near the heating element or the board.
  • The dryer heats when it shouldn't or won't stop heating. Whirlpool's tech sheet says a relay stuck closed means replacing the control board.
  • The dryer is under warranty.
