Kenmore Dryer d90 Error Code: Exhaust Vent About 90% Blocked (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-23 ยท Based on 6 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Kenmore's troubleshooting guide for its steam dryers lists "d90" and "d95" together: the ductwork is about 90% to 95% blocked because the house exhaust system is blocked, and the code only stays on the display for two hours. The Sears full service manual for Kenmore 796.6155#.610 and 796.7155#.610 dryers describes the code family as the duct work being about 80% to 95% blocked and starts the diagnosis by checking the exhaust system for restrictions and damage. d90 shows up on Kenmore dryers built by LG, whose model numbers begin with 796 (per the PartSelect prefix chart), and it works the same way as LG's own duct blockage sensor: LG lists d75, d80, d90 and d95 as roughly 75%, 80%, 90% and 95% exhaust restriction. So d90 is one step short of the worst level, d95. Kenmore dryers made by Whirlpool (model numbers starting with 110) or Frigidaire (417) don't use this code, so check the first three digits of your model number, found on the label inside the door opening.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Stop drying loads until the vent is cleared. Kenmore's manual warns that using the dryer with a severely restricted exhaust can cause a fire or other property damage.
  2. Clean the lint screen, and vacuum lint out of the lint screen opening.
  3. Run the dryer and go outside to feel the vent hood. Kenmore's manual says there should be strong airflow. Weak or no airflow means the restriction is in the duct or hood.
  4. Clear the vent hood and the area around it, and make sure the damper flap opens freely and isn't clogged with lint or damaged.
  5. Unplug the dryer (and turn off the gas valve on a gas model before moving it), pull it out carefully, and disconnect the duct from the back. Look for lint plugs, kinks or crushed sections, as LG's d90 steps describe, and clear them.
  6. Clean the duct run with a dryer vent brush kit from both ends if you can reach it.
  7. Replace any plastic or foil transition duct with 4-inch rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. Kenmore's instructions say to secure joints with duct tape or clamps, never screws that stick into the duct and catch lint, and to keep any flexible metal duct to 8 feet or less in total.
  8. Reconnect everything, push the dryer back without crushing the duct, and run a cycle. The code should not come back once airflow is restored.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • You can't reach or clear the whole duct run, for example a long run through an attic, wall or roof. LG and Kenmore both recommend a professional duct cleaning service for blockages you can't see.
  • The run is too long or has too many elbows. Kenmore's chart for one 796 dryer allows up to 65 feet of 4-inch metal duct with no elbows using the recommended vent hood, deducts length for each elbow, and doesn't recommend more than four 90-degree elbows. A run over the limit needs rerouting.
  • d90 keeps coming back after the lint screen, transition duct, house duct and vent hood are all clean and airflow outside is strong. At that point the dryer itself needs a technician to check it.
  • Anything involving the gas line or gas connection on a gas dryer.
  • You see scorched lint, smell burning or find a melted duct. Stop using the dryer.
