Kenmore Washer Error Code LE: Locked Motor, Drum Won't Turn (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
The Kenmore Elite 796.4100 Use and Care Guide lists LE as "a motor error has occurred" and tells owners to let the washer stand for 30 minutes and restart the cycle, calling for service if LE persists. Kenmore's LG-built front-load service manuals (for example the 796.40019 and 796.488 series) call it a Locked Motor Error, and Sears PartsDirect, Kenmore's longtime parts and repair arm, lists LE on Kenmore 796 front loaders as a "locked drive motor error." Kenmore 796 top-load washers such as the 796.29002 series use the same LE code, with service checks on the Hall sensor and motor windings. LE is a 796-series code, so confirm your model number on the label inside the door or lid frame before following this page.
Likely causes
- A load that is too large or too heavy, or a single heavy item such as a bath mat, straining the motor
- Something caught between the drum and the tub (a coin, underwire or sock) that makes the drum bind
- Loose or disconnected connectors between the main control board and the motor (the stator and the Hall sensor)
- A failed rotor position (Hall) sensor, which tells the control the drum is turning
- A motor stator with an open or damaged winding
- A cracked rotor magnet on direct-drive models
- Less often, a fault in the main control board's motor drive circuit
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Turn the washer off and unplug it. Kenmore's Use and Care Guide says to let it stand for 30 minutes, then plug it back in and restart the cycle.
- If the drum is full of water, run a Drain & Spin (or Spin only) cycle after the wait. On a front loader you can also drain it through the drain pump filter at the lower front.
- Take some clothes out. Overloaded drums and single heavy, waterlogged items are a common reason the motor can't turn the drum.
- With the washer unplugged and empty, turn the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly. Grinding, scraping or a drum that stops abruptly points to something caught between the drum and tub, or a mechanical problem.
- Check pockets and the door boot (front loaders) for coins, underwires and small items.
- Run a short Rinse & Spin with an empty drum. If LE comes back right away, the problem is in the motor, its wiring or the control, and it's time for service.
๐ When to call a pro
- LE keeps coming back after the 30-minute wait with a light, balanced load. Kenmore's own guide says to call for service at that point.
- The drum is hard to turn by hand or grinds, which can mean something lodged between drum and tub or worn bearings.
- Motor checks: Kenmore's front-load service manuals have the technician reseat the motor and Hall sensor connectors at the main board, measure the stator windings (about 5 to 15 ohms between each pair of wires), test the Hall sensor and look for a cracked rotor magnet before replacing the main board.
- Top loaders (796.29 series): the service manual checks the Hall sensor supply voltage and the motor coil for an open winding, replacing the motor or main board based on the results.
- The washer is still under warranty. Kenmore's Customer Care line is 1-844-553-6667.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
