Kenmore Washer Error Code OE: Drain Error, Washer Won't Drain (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Kenmore's service manual for 796.4044 front-load washers lists OE as a Drain Error, set when the washer is "not fully drained within 10 minutes." Sears PartsDirect, Kenmore's longtime parts and repair arm, lists OE on Kenmore 796 front-load washers as "drains slowly," and the Kenmore Elite 796.4100 Use and Care Guide puts the code under "water in the washer drains slowly or not at all." The same OE drain error appears on Kenmore 796 top-load washers, such as the 796.3152 series, whose service manual walks the technician through the drain pump checks. OE is a 796-series code. Kenmore Elite HE2 and HE2 Plus washers use F21 for a drain failure instead, so check your model number (it's on the label inside the door or lid frame) before following this page.
Likely causes
- Clogged drain pump filter (front loaders), holding lint, coins, buttons or hair ties
- Drain hose kinked, pinched, crushed or clogged behind or under the washer
- Drain hose frozen in a cold garage or laundry room
- House drain or standpipe clogged, so water backs up
- Drain hose end higher than 96 inches above the bottom of the washer
- Debris caught in the drain pump impeller
- Loose or damaged wiring between the main control board and the drain pump
- A failed drain pump, or less often a control board that doesn't power the pump
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Unplug the washer. If the water inside is hot, let it cool first.
- Front loaders: open the drain pump filter access panel at the lower front. Unclip the small drain hose, set its end in a shallow pan, and pull the plug to let the water out. Expect to empty the pan several times if the drum is full.
- Twist the pump filter counterclockwise to remove it, clear out lint and anything caught in it, then twist it back in clockwise and close the panel.
- Pull the washer out and check the drain hose for kinks, pinches or clogs. The Kenmore Elite guide says the hose end should sit between 29 and 96 inches above the bottom of the washer, with no more than 8 to 12 inches pushed into the standpipe.
- If the hose may be frozen, warm the room and let it thaw before running another cycle.
- Take the hose out of the standpipe, put it in a bucket or tub, and run a spin or drain cycle. If water now pumps out, the house drain is the clog, not the washer.
- Plug the washer back in and run a Drain & Spin (or Spin only) cycle. If OE comes back with the filter and hose clear, call for service.
🛠 When to call a pro
- OE keeps coming back after the filter, hose and house drain are clear.
- You can't hear the drain pump run during a drain or spin cycle. Kenmore's service manuals have the technician check the pump connectors at the main board and test the pump coil (10 to 20 ohms on the 796.3152 top loader) and the 120 V supply to it.
- The pump hums or grinds but moves no water, which can mean a jammed or broken impeller.
- A front loader with OE on a clean filter: the service manual also has technicians check the air dome and pressure hose for clogs.
- The washer is still under warranty. Kenmore's Customer Care line is 1-844-553-6667.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Drain pump assembly
Only after the filter and hose are ruled out and the pump is confirmed bad. Match the part to your washer's full model number.

Front loaders only. Replace it if the filter or its cap is cracked or won't seal.

Replace a hose that is crushed, cracked or permanently kinked. Kenmore warns against extending it more than 6 feet.

Kenmore front loaders call for low-sudsing HE detergent; the right amount helps the washer drain and spin normally.
