Kenmore Washer LF Error Code: Long Fill, Taking Too Long to Fill (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

Sears PartsDirect, Kenmore's longtime parts and repair arm, lists LF as "Long fill" on two families of Kenmore top-load washers with model numbers that start with 110. On the Kenmore Oasis it's listed as LF or F30, and on the Kenmore VMAX it's listed as LF or F8 E1. The control expects to see the tub reach a set water level within a set time; when it doesn't, it stops and shows LF. There are two ways that happens. Either water isn't getting into the washer fast enough (closed faucet, kinked or frozen hose, clogged inlet valve screens, a failed valve), or water is getting in but the washer isn't seeing the level rise. Sears says that second case points to the air hose that runs from the bottom of the tub to the main control board, because the water level sensor is part of that board on the Oasis. Sears also says to check the drain for a siphon problem on the VMAX: if the drain hose lets water run out while the washer fills, the level never builds. Kenmore 110 washers are built by Whirlpool, and Whirlpool's own help article for the same LF and F8 E1 codes says both the hot and cold hoses must be connected and supplying water, that no more than 4.5 inches of drain hose should go into the standpipe, and that the drain hose must not be taped in. LF is a code from these Whirlpool-built Kenmores. LG-built Kenmore front loaders (model numbers starting with 796) report the same kind of problem as IE instead, so check the model number on your washer's label before following this page.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Unplug the washer for a minute or press Power to clear the code, then make sure both the hot and cold faucets behind the washer are fully open.
  2. Check both fill hoses for kinks. In winter, check that they aren't frozen if the washer sits in an unheated space.
  3. With the faucets off and a bucket ready, remove the hoses and look at the screens inside the washer's inlet ports. Clean out any grit or deposits.
  4. Turn each faucet on into the bucket for a moment. If one flows weakly, the problem is the hose or the house supply, not the washer.
  5. Check the drain hose: no more than 4.5 in should go into the standpipe, it should be held with a hose form, and it shouldn't be taped in. A siphoning drain hose is a common cause of LF.
  6. Run a short cycle and watch. If water clearly fills the tub but LF still appears, the washer isn't sensing the level, and the next checks are inside the cabinet.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • LF comes back with both faucets fully open, clean screens, strong hose flow and a correct drain setup.
  • No water enters at all, or only one temperature fills. The water valve assembly may need testing and replacing.
  • Water fills normally but LF still shows. A technician checks the air hose from the tub to the control board and, if it's fine, the main control board.
  • The washer is under warranty or a protection plan. Book service instead of opening the cabinet.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

Washer inlet hoses

Replace hoses that are kinked or flow weakly because of mineral build-up.

Water inlet valve assembly

The part Sears lists for LF when the screens are clogged or the valve won't open. Match it to your Kenmore model number.

Water level pressure hose

The air hose between the tub and the control board that Sears says to check when water fills but isn't detected.

Drain hose form

Keeps no more than 4.5 in of drain hose in the standpipe so the washer doesn't siphon.
