Whirlpool Dishwasher F8 E4: Water in the Drip Tray, Overfill Float Switch Open (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Whirlpool's error code guide lists F8E4 as "Water Detected in Drip Tray" and says to empty the drip tray, make sure the float switch is connected, and check water connections for leaks. Whirlpool's technical manual W11480208 for its 24-inch filtration dishwashers calls it "Overfill switch open": a Styrofoam float sits in the leak pan under the unit, and when water collects there the float rises and opens the switch, so the control drains the tub and prevents operation. On models without a digital display, Whirlpool says the same code shows as the Clean light flashing 8 times, a short pause, then 4 times, repeating. The code is a safety shutoff, so clearing it without finding the source of the water usually means it comes back on a later cycle.
Likely causes
- A leak that dripped into the leak pan, often a loose or cross-threaded water supply connection or a rubber washer that isn't seated, especially right after installation
- Excessive suds from hand dish soap or too much detergent, which can push water out of the tub
- Dishwasher not level and tilted forward, so water surges down the overfill funnels or over the front tub lip during the cycle
- Opening and immediately closing the door while the dishwasher is hot, which Whirlpool says can force water droplets down the funnels into the leak pan
- Float switch unplugged, or the float stuck in the up position by debris
- A fill valve stuck open (Whirlpool says to check whether F8E5 is also recorded) or a drain problem (F9E1/F9E2), causing an overfill
- Rinse aid leaking from the dispenser and adding suds
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher. Whirlpool says to press Cancel once to silence the alarm, keep the door closed, and leave the power on while the drain sequence runs.
- Look for suds when you open the door. If there's foam, let it settle and switch to detergent made for automatic dishwashers; hand dish soap causes over-sudsing.
- Disconnect power, then remove the toe panel (access panel) at the bottom front to reach the drip tray. Whirlpool says to press the snap on each side of the tray toward the center and pull it toward you gently, because the float switch wire is still attached.
- If there's water in the tray, unplug the float switch, remove and empty the tray, dry it, then reinstall it and reconnect the switch until the locking tab is visible over the back of the connector.
- Check that the float moves freely up and down with nothing jammed under it, and that you hear the switch click when it drops.
- Check every water supply connection for drips. Hand-tighten the 3/4-inch elbow fitting to avoid cross-threading, then snug it with pliers; Whirlpool says an extra 1/4 to 1/2 turn may be needed to seal the gasket. Make sure the fill hose exits at the rear left.
- Check that the dishwasher is level and not tilted forward, and adjust the leveling legs if needed.
- Restore power and water, press Cancel twice to clear the code, and run a short cycle while watching for leaks.
🛠 When to call a pro
- F8 E4 returns after the drip tray is emptied, the supply connection is tight, and you've ruled out suds and leveling.
- Water is in the tray but you can't find where it's coming from, which can mean a leaking pump seal, hose, or tub inside the cabinet.
- The code appears with the tray dry; Whirlpool's manual has a technician test the float switch (it should read as a closed circuit with the float down), the harness, and the control board.
- Other codes such as F8E5 (fill valve) or F9E1 (long drain) are also stored.
- Whirlpool's advice when the code persists is to contact Whirlpool service (1-866-698-2538 in the US) or schedule a repair.
