LG Dishwasher OE Error Code: Dishwasher Not Draining (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-23 · Based on 5 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

LG's dishwasher error-code guide calls OE a Water Outlet Error. During a cycle the dishwasher sprays and drains water over and over, and OE appears on the display when the tub isn't fully drained. LG's help articles describe it the same way: the unit has detected a drain problem, most often from food clogs or an installation issue. A little standing water below the filter is normal, since LG says it stays there to block sewer smells. Water pooling above the filter level is not normal.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Turn the dishwasher off. If it just ran, wait about 30 minutes before reaching in, since LG warns the tub and filter can be hot.
  2. Pull out the lower rack, remove any large debris from the bottom of the tub, then turn the mesh filter counterclockwise and lift it out. Separate the filter parts and wash them under running water with a soft brush. Reinstall and turn clockwise until it clicks. Watch for sharp edges on the stainless steel filter.
  3. Open the cabinet under the sink and check the drain hose (usually white, gray, or corrugated). Move anything pressing on it and straighten any kinks or pinches.
  4. If your sink has an air gap, remove its cover and clear any debris with a toothpick or small brush.
  5. If the garbage disposal or the dishwasher was just installed, check that the disposal's knockout plug was removed and that no plastic pieces are left inside the inlet. LG's install guide says the dishwasher can't drain otherwise. If you're not comfortable doing this, call the installer.
  6. To drain standing water, power the dishwasher on and press and hold Start for at least 3 seconds. LG says a forced drain runs for 2 to 3 minutes.
  7. Run a Heavy Duty or Normal cycle with no dishes or detergent to flush the unit and test the drain. If water still pools above the filter or OE returns, contact LG support.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • OE keeps coming back after you've cleaned the filter, straightened the hose, and cleared the air gap. LG says a part may be faulty.
  • Water keeps pooling above the filter level even after a forced drain.
  • The dishwasher was recently installed and the drain hose is too long, too low, or too high. LG says the installer should correct it.
  • The drain hose is split, crushed beyond straightening, or frozen in an exterior wall.
  • You hear the drain pump humming but no water moves, or you hear nothing at all during the drain.
