LG Dishwasher nE Error Code: Vario Motor (Spray Diverter) Error
What the code means
LG's US support guide to dishwasher error codes says nE "may occur when the impeller does not spin normally," for example when the impeller doesn't spin or dishes touch it, and tells owners to reorganize the dishes and restart, then request service if the error persists. LG owner's manuals such as the one for the LDNPQ445S list NE simply as "Vario motor error." LG's service manual for the LDPH7972, LDTH7972, LDPM6762, LDPS6762, LDPH5554, LDPH6762 and LDTH5554 series explains what that means: the Vario motor (about 3.9 kilohms across its terminals, running on 120 VAC) turns a cam and a Vario disk inside the sump to send water to the top wash, upper spray arm or lower spray arm. As the cam turns it clicks a micro switch, and the control uses that switch to know which position the disk is in. The manual lists two failure causes for nE: the Vario motor is stuck with debris, or the micro switch is defective so it can't detect the cam turning. Its error table calls this a Vario Error and says the code is set when the Vario position fails to reset within 1 minute in the factory test mode or within 2 minutes of starting a cycle, after which all loads are turned off. Because the dishwasher can't confirm where the water is going, it stops rather than washing with the wrong arm.
Likely causes
- A dish, utensil or other item touching the lower spray arm or wash impeller so it can't spin normally (LG's first-listed cause)
- Debris such as glass, a bone, a seed or a label jammed in the Vario disk under the sump cover, which stops the Vario motor from turning
- A loose or disconnected connector at the Vario motor or its micro switch
- A defective Vario micro switch: the motor turns but the control can't tell the disk's position
- A failed Vario motor that no longer rotates
- A main control board that isn't powering the Vario motor or reading the switch
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Open the door and look at the lower rack. Move any tall or hanging item (a pot handle, a utensil through the rack, a cutting board) that could touch the lower spray arm, and make sure the arm spins freely by hand.
- Restart the dishwasher. LG's guide says to reorganize the dishes and restart; if the code doesn't come back, nothing else is needed.
- If it returns, turn off the power to the dishwasher and remove the lower rack, the lower spray arm and the filter. Clear any food, glass or other debris you can see around the spray arm hub and the sump opening.
- Check that the lower spray arm is seated correctly when you put it back, then restore power and run a short cycle.
- If nE still appears, stop there and request service. Clearing debris from the Vario disk itself means taking off the water guide and the screwed-on sump cover, and LG's manual treats that and all motor, switch and board checks as work for authorized service technicians.
๐ When to call a pro
- nE comes back after the dishes are rearranged and the spray arm and filter area are clear. LG says inspection by a service technician is needed.
- Removing the sump cover to clear debris from the Vario disk, or reseating the Vario motor and micro switch connectors under the base.
- Testing in LG's service test mode, where the Vario motor runs and resets to its starting position. The manual's checks are listening for the micro switch clicking, then checking the switch, the motor connector and the main board, and replacing the switch, motor or board depending on which one fails.
- Measuring the Vario motor winding resistance. LG's service manual gives about 3.9 kilohms; a technician reference site lists a normal range of about 2.7 to 4.0 kilohms, and replacing the motor if it is out of range.
