LG Dryer 9A5 Code: It Actually Says "GAS" (No Gas Supply)
What the code means
LG's dryer displays use seven-segment characters, so the letters G, A and S can look like the number 9, an A and the number 5. LG's own help pages (the LG USA dryer error code list, the LG USA "Troubleshooting 9A5 Message" article, and LG Canada's video article) all say the same thing: "The 9A5 is not an error code, but rather a display message," it is "actually spelling 'GAS,'" and it "means the machine is not getting the proper gas supply." It only applies to LG gas dryers; electric LG dryers don't use a gas line. LG's fix list is short: confirm the gas supply valve is turned on and fully open, check that the gas supply line is connected to the dryer and is not kinked or bent, and contact the installer if the dryer is newly installed and opening the valve doesn't help or the gas line looks damaged. If the dryer isn't new, the valve is fully open, and the line is connected properly, LG says the unit will need a repair. Because a gas dryer that can't get gas can't heat, you'll usually notice the dryer tumbling without drying, or the cycle stopping with GAS on the display.
Likely causes
- The gas shutoff valve behind or near the dryer is closed or only partly open (common after a move, a new install, or other work on the gas line)
- The flexible gas supply line is kinked, crushed or bent, often after the dryer was pushed back against the wall
- The gas line isn't connected to the dryer, or is damaged, on a new installation
- Gas service to the house is off or interrupted (for example, other gas appliances aren't working either)
- If gas is reaching the dryer, a fault inside the dryer's gas burner system, which LG says needs a service visit
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance and shut off its gas valve before working on it; never disconnect or alter the gas line. If you smell gas, leave and call your gas utility.
- Read the display as letters: 9A5 is LG's way of spelling GAS, so this is about the gas supply, not a random number code.
- Check the gas shutoff valve on the line feeding the dryer and make sure it's turned fully on. On a typical quarter-turn valve, the handle is parallel to the pipe when it's open.
- Pull the dryer out carefully and check the flexible gas line: it should be connected to the dryer and not kinked, crushed or sharply bent. Leave a little room behind the dryer so the line isn't pinched when you push it back.
- If other gas appliances in the house also aren't working, the problem is the gas service itself; contact your gas utility.
- After fixing the valve or line, unplug the dryer for a minute, plug it back in, and start a cycle to see if it heats normally.
- If you smell gas at any point, stop, don't operate any switches, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Don't try to repair gas connections yourself.
๐ When to call a pro
- The dryer is newly installed and opening the valve didn't help, or the gas line looks damaged: LG says to contact the installer.
- The dryer isn't new, the valve is fully open, and the line is connected and not kinked, but GAS still shows: LG says the dryer needs service. You can request a repair through LG support.
- Any gas smell, or any repair that involves disconnecting or replacing the gas line or parts of the burner, should be done by a qualified gas technician.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Flexible gas dryer connector
Only if the existing line is kinked, crushed or damaged. Replacing it means working on a gas connection, so have the installer or a qualified technician do it.
