LG Dryer Error Code D95: Vent About 95% Blocked (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
LG's Flow Sense system checks how well hot, humid air leaves the dryer. LG USA says d75, d80, d90 and d95 mean the exhaust duct is about 75%, 80%, 90% or 95% clogged, so d95 is the top of the scale; two or four lit bars on the Flow Sense indicator likewise mean the exhaust is severely restricted. LG Canada says these warnings mean poor venting is making the dryer run hot, and that the dryer may shut down to keep from overheating and becoming a fire hazard. LG's owner's manual groups d80, d90 and d95 as the duct being 80% to 95% blocked and says not to use the dryer until the exhaust system has been cleaned or repaired. The code is shown for 2 hours only, so it may be gone by the time you look; long drying times or a very hot dryer are the usual clues it was there. The manual also says the warning isn't a dryer failure and isn't covered by the dryer warranty.
Likely causes
- Lint packed in the lint filter, the filter housing, or along the vent duct
- Exhaust hose behind the dryer crushed, dented or kinked, often after the dryer was pushed back or moved
- Flexible hose coiled like a spring, sagging, torn, or loose at a joint
- Outside vent hood flaps stuck shut with lint, or blocked by a cover, cage, nest or debris (in a new house the end cap is sometimes still closed)
- A duct run that's too long or has too many 90-degree elbows
- An overstuffed load that keeps air from moving from the back of the drum to the front
- Rarely, a weak or failing blower fan, if the warning stays after the vent has been fully cleaned or replaced
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Stop drying loads until the vent is cleared. Unplug the dryer, and on a gas dryer shut off the gas valve before pulling it out.
- Clean the lint filter. If it's coated, wash it with warm water and a soft brush and let it dry fully before reinstalling it.
- Disconnect the exhaust hose and check that it isn't crushed, kinked, torn or coiled. A gentle S-curve is fine.
- Brush or vacuum lint out of the hose, the dryer's exhaust outlet, and as much of the wall duct as you can reach. A drill-powered dryer vent brush helps on longer runs.
- Go outside to the vent hood. Clear lint, nests and debris, and make sure the flaps can open all the way.
- Replace foil or plastic hose with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, and keep the run short and straight. Your owner's manual lists the maximum duct length for your model and number of elbows.
- Reconnect everything, run a timed or Air Dry cycle with the drum empty, and feel for strong airflow at the outside vent.
- Run a few normal cycles. Flow Sense needs several consecutive cycles to register the better airflow before the warning resets; LG says to call for service if it's still on after five.
๐ When to call a pro
- The vent runs inside walls, an attic or a roof and you can't clean all of it. LG recommends a dryer vent cleaning specialist, especially for runs that are inaccessible or too long to clean yourself.
- The duct is extremely long or has too many turns. LG's manual says to have it repaired or rerouted.
- The Flow Sense warning is still active more than five cycles after the restriction has been cleared. LG's manual says to call for service, and LG Canada notes the blower fan may be defective.
- You smell burning or the dryer is very hot to the touch. Stop using it until it has been inspected.
- You have a gas dryer and suspect a gas supply problem. Gas work should be done by a qualified technician.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
