LG Dryer nP Error Code: No Current Detected at the Heater (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
LG's dryer error code lists define nP as "no current being detected at the heater" and say it normally indicates a problem with the electrical wiring in the home. That is why LG's steps start at the cord, the breaker and the outlet. LG pairs nP with a related code, PS, which means improper voltage within the power cord, for example the white and red wires reversed on the dryer's terminal block. If the house supply checks out and the dryer still isn't heating, LG says the dryer itself needs service. LG's service manuals treat no-heat as a check of the supply first (208 to 240 volts, plus or minus 10%, between L1 and L2 at the outlet), then the heater element, the high-limit and safety thermostats, the motor and the main board.
Likely causes
- The power cord isn't fully plugged in, or the outlet isn't a grounded outlet matching the dryer's 240-volt rating (LG)
- A tripped breaker or blown fuse on the dryer circuit (LG says to reset the breaker)
- A faulty outlet or house wiring that isn't delivering the correct voltage (LG says to have a licensed electrician check it)
- A loose or incorrectly connected power cord at the dryer's terminal block, especially on a new installation (LG says to call the installer)
- If the supply is correct: a fault inside the dryer's heating circuit, such as the element, a thermostat or the main board (from LG's no-heat service flowchart)
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Check that the power cord is pushed firmly into a grounded outlet that matches the 240-volt rating on the dryer's rating plate.
- At the main panel, turn the dryer's circuit breaker off for at least 10 seconds, then back on. LG says this clears a power surge inside the breaker.
- If your home uses fuses instead of breakers, check the fuses for the dryer circuit.
- If the dryer was just installed, ask the installer to check the power cord connection at the terminal block and the wall outlet. LG also says to follow your owner's manual for the model-specific cord installation.
- Run a heated cycle and check whether the air coming out of the drum is warm. If nP comes back or there's still no heat, stop here and move on to an electrician or service.
🛠 When to call a pro
- nP stays after the breaker reset. LG says the outlet may need a licensed electrician to confirm it's supplying the correct voltage.
- The breaker keeps tripping, or the outlet, plug, cord or terminal block looks scorched or feels hot. Stop using the dryer.
- The outlet checks out but the dryer still won't heat. LG says the dryer then requires repair service; a technician will test the heater element, thermostats and main board.
- You see PS instead of nP or along with it. LG links PS to reversed or loose wires on the terminal block, which should be corrected by someone comfortable with 240-volt wiring.
