LG Washer dE2 Error Code: Door Closed but Won't Lock (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
LG's help library says a dE2 error appears when the washer door doesn't lock, and its front-load error code list describes dE2 as "the door is closed but not locked" (LG lists E30 as the same code on some models). It's a step past dE1, which means the door is open or not fully closed: with dE2 the door switch sees the door as shut, but the lock can't engage or confirm it's locked. Front-load washers lock the door before every cycle, so the washer stops and shows dE2 instead of running. LG's listed causes are an overloaded drum, laundry caught between the door and the gasket, a door that isn't fully closed, a deformed rubber gasket, or a damaged door or door component such as a bent or broken latch. LG also warns that if you can only get the washer to recognize the door by slamming it, the door may be misaligned or the latch slightly out of position, and slamming can damage the latch or the door switch sensor. If you see dE or dE1 instead, see the LG dE1 page.
Likely causes
- Too much laundry in the drum, so the door can't close all the way
- Clothing or a small item caught between the door and the rubber door gasket
- The door isn't pushed fully shut until the latch clicks
- A deformed rubber gasket that keeps the door from sealing
- A bent or broken door latch, or another damaged door component, so the lock can't engage
- A door that's misaligned, or a latch slightly out of position, often after repeated slamming
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Open the door and look around the opening and the rubber gasket. Move all laundry farther back into the drum so nothing is caught near the door.
- If the drum is packed, take some items out. LG lists overloading as a cause of dE2.
- Close the door gently by pressing the center of the handle until it clicks. Don't slam it; LG says slamming can damage the latch or door switch sensor.
- Reset the washer: turn it off, unplug it or switch off the breaker, press and hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds, then restore power and start the cycle again.
- Check the door latch (the hook on the door) for anything bent, cracked or loose, and check the gasket for a fold or deformed spot that holds the door open.
๐ When to call a pro
- dE2 keeps coming back after you clear the door and reset the washer. LG says service is required at that point.
- The latch on the door is bent or broken, or the door sags and won't line up with the lock.
- The door only registers as closed when you slam it. LG says that points to a misaligned door or latch and recommends contacting LG instead of forcing it.
- The washer is under warranty. Request service through LG support rather than replacing the door lock yourself.
Parts that commonly fix it
